Eric Berndt Ends Long Winless Drought At Stafford Speedway With ...

STAFFORD - The reward for surviving Sunday at Stafford Motor Speedway was a trip to victory lane for the first time in five years for Eric Berndt.

Eric Berndt Eyes Stafford WMT 8-6-10.jpgBerndt held off Ted Christopher on a late restart to win the caution-marred 40-lap NASCAR Whelen All-American Series SK Modified feature Sunday at the CarQuest Fall Final at Stafford.

It was Berndt's first SK Modified victory at the track since Sept. 1, 2006.

"I'm glad to be back," Berndt said. "It's been a long road."

It was the 10th career SK Modified victory at Stafford for Berndt, who won his first at the track at the Fall Final on Sept. 24, 2000.

Glen Reen of Wilbraham, Mass. was second and Christopher, of Plainville, third.

It was sweet redemption for Berndt, who saw what looked like a sure victory at the track slip away thanks to a bad restart with two laps remaining on Sept. 2. On that night Berndt was driving a car loaned to him by fellow Stafford Speedway competitor Keith Rocco.

Sunday Berndt, also a regular on the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour,?held off Christopher on a lap 37 restart and cruised over the closing two laps to the win.

"I was comfortable in my own car," Berndt said. "I knew I had to hit it perfect and I did. I knew what we needed to do."

Christopher lost second place to Reen on the restart.

"I really didn't need that [final caution]," Christopher said. "We got underneath [Berndt] going into [turn] four [before the caution flew]. We caught him and stuff. But on the restart we just didn't go. What are you going to do? It was a good run from the back and it was fun."

Berndt started eighth in the field and was up to second by lap 12. On lap 17 Berndt went past Todd Owen to take the lead. Keith Rocco, who started the race 31st, was up to fourth by lap 23 before contact from Dan Avery sent him spinning.

Rocco battled back again from the rear and was up to seventh by lap 33 when sparks began to fly between himself and James Civali. Rocco used a tap to get by Civali for sixth place, but it was Civali who returned the favor with multiple bangs to Rocco's rear. When the caution flew on lap 37 Stafford Speedway officials made the decision to eject Civali from the event for over aggressive driving.

Rocco ended up fifth.

Skin Cancer Causes, Treatments and Results

Skin Cancer is one of the most common types of cancer with about 1 in 5 People in america being affected each year. The incidence on the cancer with the skin has been recorded to have risen more than the years of the enhance in the level of risk thing and carcinogens inside the environment.

Though there are 3 well-liked form of skin cancer; the Basal cell carcinoma, Squamous cell carcinoma and Melanoma, the very first two are not incredibly serious and can be treated and cured easily. The third type, Melanoma, the cancer from the melanocyte is the most severe from the whole lot and causes probably the most quantity of skin cancer associated death about the world.

What are the main reasons of Skin Cancer?

.Exposure to sun

The quantity one lead to of skin cancer is the more than exposure on the Ultra Violet rays from the sun or any other sources. The time of exposure, the intensity in the UV rays and whether the skin was protected (with clothes or anti sun creams) all decides the chance of getting skin cancer in the lengthy run.

.White skin

White skinned folks are a lot more prone to cancer of the skin than the darker skinned ones, as well as the difference comes as a result of the level of naturally occurring sun protecting pigment inside skin; melanin. Melanin pigment that may be high in dark skin protects it from the dangerous rays of the sun thus saving it from cancer. But dark skinned men too, do have a chance on the disease even though comparatively less.

.Exposure to carcinogen

Certain chemicals like arsenic, tar, nicotine and oil are observed to elevate the adjust of acquiring skin cancer. Whilst these occur under skin carcinogen, only extended word exposure is found to cause the disease in numerous cases.

.Family history?

The genetic makeup and also the family members history can also contribute towards occurrence of skin cancer. Acquiring an individual within the family affected with skin cancer increases the chance of acquiring the disease.

Besides all these risk factors, you will discover even now quite a few factors that might bring about skin cancer or elevate the chance of it.

How can skin cancer be treated?

There are many ways to treat skin cancer depending on the severity in the disease and exactly where it has affected. Early and correct diagnosis on the disease helps to treat it better and far more effectively. The numerous technique for the powerful treatment includes

.Surgery

Non melanomas cancer or tumour can be entirely removed by various surgical means being followed today. Cryosurgery, effortless excision, dermabrasion, laser surgical treatment are among the surgical approaches that effectively removes the cancerous skin tissue.

.Chemotherapy

Inter venal or oral chemotherapeutic treatment targeted in particular on the cancerous cells can treat the cancer by either killing the cells or arresting their cell division capability. Cancer in the skin can also be sometimes treated by applying the chemotherapeutic medicine on the affected skin from the type or creams or ointments.

.Radiation Therapy

The 2 forms, external or the internal radiation therapy can be applied to your treatment depending on a type of cancer. Depending over a sort of skin cancer and how much it had advanced, either type of the therapy is chosen.

.Photodynamic therapy

This is really a more novel way to treat cancer and has tiny effect over a regular healthy tissue. Right here photoactive drugs are given to the patient and these drugs specifically bind towards the skin cells that are cancerous. Once laser light is shone on the patients affected areas, the drug becomes active and kills off the diseased cells leaving in the regular cells.

What are the outcomes of Skin cancer treatment?

Different methods towards treatment of skin cancer have proven to be very powerful in removing the tumour and controlling the cancerous growth. But as in each other cancer treatment, these treatment too comes using a few side effects.

Surgical removal from the cancerous tissue within the skin can lead to a lifelong scar on a body. and sometimes even an expert surgeon can?t assure a cent percent zero scar removal with the cancer.

Chemotherapeutic treatment using creams and ointments can cause inflammation inside area of application. The inflammations caused in some men and women are so severe that they may possibly need to discontinue the medication and switch to other treatment scheme. Chemotherapy can also cause nausea, vomiting and hair loss during the patients undergoing the treatment.

Obesity or stem cell research could win Nobel (AP)

STOCKHOLM ? Two scientists who unlocked some of the mysteries linked to obesity or a professor who figured out how to make stem cells without human embryos could be candidates for the medicine award when the first of the 2011 Nobel Prizes are announced Monday.

The prize committees don't give any clues ? they even keep nominations secret for 50 years ? but winners usually have won many other awards and distinctions before they are considered for a Nobel.

Canadian-born Douglas Coleman and American Jeffrey Friedman have won several prizes for their discovery of leptin, a hormone that regulates food intake and body weight, and could be in the running for the coveted prize worth 10 million kronor ($1.5 million).

Last year, Coleman, of the Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor, Maine, and Friedman, of Rockefeller University in New York, received the Lasker Award, often seen as a precursor to the Nobel, for having shown that obesity is frequently linked to metabolic disruptions, or the lack of leptin, rather than being a self-induced problem.

Japanese Shinya Yamanaka, another potential Nobel candidate, offered the world of regenerative medicine a breakthrough with experiments showing that stem cells can be made from ordinary skin cells. The discovery led to a leap in stem cell research, reducing the need for using human embryos.

Yamanaka won the Lasker Award in 2009 and this year shared Israel's Wolf Prize. One out of three Wolf award-winners in chemistry, physics and medicine have also won a Nobel Prize.

Yamanaka, of Kyoto University in Japan and the Gladstone Institute of Cardiovascular Disease in San Francisco, could share the prize with British cloning pioneer John Gurdon or Canadian stem cell researcher James Till. Till discovered blood stem sells, which have saved the life of many thousands of leukemia patients.

"Gurdon's cloning technique and Yamanaka's stem cells are highly interesting in the field of basic science," wrote science reporter Karin Bojs of Swedish daily Dagens Nyheter, who has stood out as a leading Nobel guesser over the years. "But so far, not a single sick person has been cured with these discoveries. It is therefore possible that Yamanaka and Gurdon get to share the prize with Canadian James Till."

Bojs said other possible candidates for the prize are the American-French trio Ronald Evans, Elwood Jensen and Pierre Chambon for their research on nuclear hormone receptors, and American David Julius for his discoveries of the molecular mechanisms by which the skin senses pain, heat and cold.

"It will be awarded to fundamental discoveries that leads to an understanding of the human body and, or treatment or prevention of illnesses," said Nobel Prize Committee Secretary Goran Hansson, declining to give away more details.

He said there are so many Nobel-worthy achievements in medicine that it can be hard to select a winner.

In an unusual leak last year, a Swedish newspaper revealed the jury's selection ? British test tube baby pioneer Robert Edwards ? before the announcement. The committee has since applied even stricter rules on keeping their discussions and documents surrounding potential candidates secret.

But that doesn't keep people from making predictions.

The scientific department of Thomson Reuters, which analyzes high-impact academic papers to make predictions, suggested U.S. scientists Brian Druker, Nicholas Lydon, and Charles Sawyers, could be awarded for work related to Gleevec and Sprycel, drugs that transformed chronic myelogenous leukemia from a fatal cancer into a manageable chronic condition.

Its predictions also include Robert Langer and Joseph Vacanti "for their pioneering research in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine," as well as Jacques Miller, Robert Coffman and Timothy Mosmann for their discovery of two types of blood cells and their role in regulating immune responses.

The Nobel Prizes date back to 1901 after a will left behind by Swedish dynamite inventor Alfred Nobel, and medicine winners are typically awarded for a specific breakthrough rather than a body of research.

The other award categories include physics, chemistry, literature and peace. The economics award isn't technically a Nobel and was established by Sweden's central bank in 1968.

The prizes are handed out every year on Dec. 10, on the anniversary of Nobel's death in 1896.

Support organization for Basque group ETA disbands (AP)

MADRID ? A civic support organization for the Basque separatist group ETA has disbanded in Spain, a newspaper that acts as a mouthpiece for the separatists reported Saturday.

The news adds weight to Spanish government claims that support for ETA's violent tactics is crumbling. The group has been responsible for hundreds of killings since the late 1960s.

According to Gara newspaper, the support group, Ekin, formed in November 1999 with the aim of "impelling independence, nation-building and socialism at street level." But on Saturday, the paper's website said two unidentified spokesmen told it. "Ekin members have ended their endeavors as an organization."

Interior Minister, Antonio Camacho, said Ekin's disappearance proved ETA was "in an unstoppable process of dissolution."

"We are experiencing the last phase of the terrorist group's existence," Camacho said.

Government spokesman Jose Blanco said Ekin's disbanding was yet another step toward ETA's demise, but he added that it was "not the final step" that Spain hoped for.

"What the whole of Spanish society yearns for is a statement announcing an end to terrorism, and the end of ETA," Blanco said Saturday.

ETA, which is classified as a terrorist organization by Spain, the European Union and the U.S., has killed 829 people since the late 1960s in a campaign of bombings and shootings aimed at forcing the government to allow the creation of an independent Basque homeland.

Former National Court judge Baltasar Garzon found in April 2001 that Ekin, like the banned Batasuna party, had acted as a political wing for ETA, "co-directing activity" such as low-level street violence.

In April 2001 Garzon banned Ekin for being part of ETA, and in July of that year he jailed 31 of its members for "collaboration with ETA."

A week ago, a group representing 700 ETA prisoners in Spain and France called for an end to violence as a tool for achieving Basque independence.

The prisoners' group also endorsed a groundbreaking agreement reached late last year by pro-independence Basque political parties ? chiefly the remnants of Batasuna ? and civic groups such as Ekin, that said Basque independence should be achieved through peaceful means.

ETA declared a cease-fire in September 2010 and went further in January by calling the truce permanent and saying it was prepared to let international observers verify it.

The separatist group has been decimated in recent years by arrests of its leaders and members, and it has not killed anyone in Spain in more than two years.

Combating mood disorders: New approach simplifies the search for more specific drugs

ScienceDaily (Sep. 30, 2011) ? Many psychiatric conditions are caused by aberrant metabolism of the neurotransmitter serotonin. Researchers in the Department of Pharmacy at LMU have now developed a new screening method, which will facilitate the search for new drugs that modulate the biological activity of serotonin.

Psychiatric ailments such as depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder or anxiety states are often associated with disturbances in the metabolism of the neurotransmitter serotonin. Neurotransmitters are compounds that are released from the synapses at nerve cell endings and activate the firing of neighboring neurons. Thus, as their name suggests, they mediate the transmission of nerve impulses. The serotonin transporter (SERT) is responsible for reuptake of the transmitter into neurons, terminating its action. SERT is a major target for drugs that are used to treat many mood disorders, and the search for new SERT inhibitors is of continuing therapeutic relevance.

A research team led by Professor Klaus Wanner of the Department of Pharmacy in the Center for Pharmaceutical Research at Ludwig-Maximilians Univerist?t M?nchen (LMU) has now developed a novel binding assay, based on the use of mass spectrometry (MS), which promises to simplify the search for potential SERT inhibitors very significantly. The major advantage of the technique is that, unlike conventional binding assays, it avoids the need to use radiolabeled substances.

A paper that describes the new assay will appear in the journal ChemMedChem on 4. October. The article has been rated as a "very important paper" and is featured on the cover of the upcoming issue of the journal. To be effective, most drugs must bind selectively to defined molecular targets in the body. The target may be an enzyme found in certain cells or a protein on the plasma membrane of a specific cell type. Drug candidates must therefore be assessed for their affinity for the target by means of binding assays. These assays often involve the use of a chemical that is already known to recognize and bind selectively to the target as.

The ability of a test substance to find and interact with the target is then measured in terms of how well it competes with this "marker" ligand. The greater its ability to displace the marker from the binding site, the higher is its own affinity for the target, and the more likely it is to be clinically effective. In the MS-based binding assay developed by Wanner's group, quantification of the marker is carried out using mass spectrometry. In contrast to conventional techniques, which employ radiolabeled ligands, MS binding assays do not require the use of markers containing radioactive isotopes.

This means that the marker can be assayed in its unaltered, native state. "This label-free technique provides all the advantages offered by classical binding studies, while avoiding the need to work with radioactive compounds," explains Wanner. His team has now validated the MS-based binding assay for use in the search for new inhibitors of SERT function. "Because SERT regulates the concentration of serotonin in the synaptic cleft, the protein serves as the major target for the treatment of depression, obsessive-compulsive disorders and anxiety states," says Wanner. Using the well-known antidepressant (S)-fluoxetine as a native marker, his group has now shown that the results of the MS-based assay are in very good agreement with those obtained using radiolabeled ligands. Indeed, the team now routinely uses the MS method to screen for novel, pharmacologically active SERT inhibitors.

In addition, Wanner has plans to adapt the approach for use with other target molecules of clinical interest.
