Many Egyptians are living without electricity or jobs, and soon, those who still do have access to power may also have to do without online porn, which has been declared illegal within the country.

While some have criticized the government for pursuing a pornography ban when larger issues loom over the embattled nation, conservatives in the government have kept a steady fire burning to eradicate what they consider a moral scourge. The lawmaker leading the charge, Dr. Younis Makhioun, targeted porn sites as the gateway drug to all kinds of societal problems, including divorce and rape (though, as The Next Web pointed out, he didn't provide any evidence backing up his claims.)?

Backed up by the Ministry?of telecommunications and information technology, Makhioun pushed for the ruling, which came from an Egyptian court.

Egypt officially banned porn first in 2009, which the lawyer that led that movement called "a "victory over vice and corruption" -- but it was never enforced. Looks like three years later, the courts are hoping this ban sticks better.

Egypt -- part of the early 2011 Arab Spring uprising/revolution an -- has recently been beset by fuel shortages, soccer stadium melees and fatal riots, and further prosecution of pro-democracy activists.?

The Internet played a huge part in that uprising, both in getting the word out to the rest of the world, and to connecting dissidents within the country. Now, as then, it might prove challenging for Egyptian officials to control content people want to see.?

Details of what is considered pornography have not emerged.

Most of the comments posted so far have been jokes. But I think this is great.

I would have very much loved to have one of these when I was taking science classes in high school. Heck, I'd love to have one now.

The biggest flaw is that this is an expensive piece of custom equipment. No criticism of Dr. Jansen intended; he made the gadget he wanted to have. But I would like to see a design that is less expensive and mass-produced, that has just the sensors in a sort of cradle; you would put a smart phone into the cradle and plug in by USB. The cradle might need to contain a battery (I'm not sure how much current a smartphone micro-USB port can source).

It would be more elegant if it used something like the iPhone's docking connector, but Apple charges money to use that thing, and on Android there is no similar standard. Just using USB would seem to offer the widest compatibility.

Since the CPU needs are low, you should be able to use phones from 2+ years ago. When people upgrade to new phones they often have a surplus older phone, and maybe they will donate the older phone to the high school science program. Or if you just want one for yourself, you could buy something from eBay or Craigs List.

This makes me think back to when the Palm PDA was new. The Palm had a serial port on the bottom, and there were sensor packages you could get to plug in to it. I read about a high school science teacher taking his class on a field trip, and they used pH and temperature sensors to measure a wetlands.

Back when I carried around a Handspring Visor, I always wanted a Springboard module with a Volt/Ohm meter and probes; and another one with thermometer and such. There really was one with a magnetic compass, and I think there was at least one with a GPS receiver in it.

Five Favorite Films with Lucy Liu

In a busy career across movies, stage and TV, Lucy Liu has played all kinds of roles: fashionistas, Charlie's Angels, animated snakes and -- perhaps most memorably -- sword-wielding, scalp-collecting bosses of deadly assassination squads. She's currently appearing in Detachment and this week's The Trouble with Bliss, an independent New York comedy co-starring Dexter's Michael C. Hall and 21 Jump Street's Brie Larson. With the movie opening in New York, LA and across VOD, Liu called in for a conversation about her role, while also sharing some stories from the Chinese set of The Man with the Iron Fists -- the upcoming martial arts movie directed by and starring the RZA, with Russell Crowe, Gordon Liu and Pam Grier. Read on for more of the chat, but first up -- her five favorite films.

One of my favorite films is Red Sorghum, by Zhang Yimou, who's an incredible director -- just incredibly visual. The way that he shoots a film and takes a time in history and connects it to somebody; he takes a moment in somebody's life and also connects it historically to what happened between the Japanese and the Chinese during the war. I just think it's so elegantly done. It sort of shows not just what's going on in the family itself, but links that personal story -- you get involved in that and then connected to the backdrop of the war, how their family, how their business all kind of connects. It's incredibly heartbreaking and very real. It was very impactful. I saw it when I was in college, and I was destroyed. [Laughs] Destroyed by that movie. There's a quality in his movies that really stands out, that I haven't really seen in a lot of other movies.

Another movie that I really love -- and I'm sure you know it -- is It Happened One Night, which is, I think, one of the best romantic comedies out there. I remember seeing that movie and falling in love with Clark Gable and just thinking how fantastic that backdrop was, on the train. It seemed like a very real relationship, like they really were in love with one another. [Laughs] I didn't seem so pat, you know?

I also love 2046 by Wong Kar Wai, a film which I thought was so beautifully shot, with an incredible story. I love that he uses the location as a character. He has a very romantic way, a very sexy way of presenting everything, and the cinematography in that is absolutely stunning. He obviously has a very strong vision for what he wants to do and how he wants to do it. All of his movies, I think they're very intimate: They don't always require huge stages, but he always seems to capture something in a very small area. I like the way he presents things. He creates an atmosphere and you get swept into it right away.

I love Being There, it's one of my favorite movies -- with Peter Sellers, who I thought was brilliant. I love how underplayed but so incredibly funny it was, you know... dry. [Laughs] There's something wonderful about the misconceptions [about the main character] that create the simplicity of all of it. The misconceptions create a simplicity which then creates this aura. I love that movie.

Then I have, well, I have two movies: Godfather one and two. An incredibly absorbing story that unravels and captures a time that really existed in New York. It just draws you in and just keeps you. There are moments in that that you can't believe. You watch it and you go, "Oh, right" and then you hear the dialogue and then you realize that this is an incredibly famous quote. [Laughs] It's all-time, basically. A side one that I love, just 'cause I grew up watching it, and it happened to air around my birthday in December, was The Sound of Music. It reminds me very much of my childhood, that kind of hopeful, contagious optimism that Julie Andrews had -- and also set in the backdrop of war. But that's more of a childhood thing. Then there's Drunken Master, but for different reasons, and different entertainment values, you know? It's hard. There's a list a mile long. In very small font. But asked to narrow it down, I will narrow it down to those movies right now. [Laughs]

Max Planck researcher honored for his work in evolutionary game theory

Eleven years ago, the German Physical Society (DPG) has introduced the "Young Scientist Award for Socio- and Econophysics" to promote interdisciplinary applications of physics. The Prize, endowed with 5000 euros and donated by d-fine, has been a key instrument to encourage research in this direction.

This year's recipient is Arne Traulsen, Group Leader at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Biology in Pln. He is working on evolutionary game theory, an extension of classical game theory to biology. In the past years, evolutionary game theory has attracted increasing interest of economists, sociologists, and also physicists. Arne Traulsen applies techniques from statistical physics to these systems and has been a major figure in developing the field of stochastic evolutionary game dynamics. One of the most intriguing problems of evolutionary game theory is the evolution of cooperation: How can cooperation between selfish actors emerge when every individual is not interested in the welfare of the group, but maximizes his or her personal payoff? The awardee's work has shown how cooperation can be promoted by population structure and how it can be established, either by mutual enforcement of the actors themselves or by creating a central authority. He is also collaborating with scientists performing economic experiments to test the predictions of such models.

Arne Traulsen was born 1975 in Kiel and studied geophysics and physics in Kiel, Leipzig and Gteborg. He did his Diploma with Ulrich Behn at Leipzig University and then moved to Kiel, where he obtained a PhD in Theoretical Physics working with Heinz-Georg Schuster. After a PostDoc with Martin Nowak at Harvard University, he established an Emmy-Noether group for Evolutionary Dynamics at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Biology in Pln, where he obtained tenured position recently. The award ceremony takes place on March 28 during the spring meeting of the German Physical Society in Berlin. It will feature a keynote lecture by Stefan Thurner from Vienna on financial systems and a presentation of the awardee on the evolution of cooperation is dilemma situations.

Carbon dioxide was hidden in the ocean during last Ice Age

ScienceDaily (Mar. 29, 2012) ? Why did the atmosphere contain so little carbon dioxide (CO₂) during the last Ice Age 20,000 years ago? Why did it rise when Earth's climate became warmer? Processes in the ocean are responsible for this, says a new study based on newly developed isotope measurements.

This study has now been published in the scientific journal Science by scientists from the Universities of Bern and Grenoble and the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research in the Helmholtz Association.

Around 20,000 years ago, the atmospheric CO₂ concentration during the last Ice Age was distinctly lower than in the following warm period. Measurements from Antarctic ice cores showed this already two decades ago. An international team of glaciologists thereafter looked even further back in time. The climate researchers found that this close connection between carbon dioxide and temperature has existed over the past 800,000 years: with low CO₂ concentrations during the Ice Ages and higher CO₂ values during warm periods. Now they tried to answer also the question as to where the carbon dioxide was hidden during the Ice Ages and how it got back into the atmosphere at their ends.

"We have now been able to identify processes in the ocean which are connected to the observed rise in CO₂," says Dr. Jochen Schmitt, lead author of the recently published study and researcher at the Oeschger Centre for Climate Change Research at the University of Bern. According to Schmitt, during the Ice Age more and more carbon dioxide accumulated in the deep ocean, causing the concentration of atmospheric CO₂ to drop. Only at the end of the Ice Age this stored CO₂ was transported back to the sea surface through changing ocean circulation and thus emitted back into the atmosphere, write the scientists in the scientific journal "Science."

A new method for isotope measurements has now made it possible for the first time "to reliably decode the fingerprint of the CO₂ preserved in the ice," explains Schmitt. He and his colleague Prof. Hubertus Fischer initially developed these new isotope measurement methods for ice cores at the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research and further refined them in many years of research work after moving to Bern. Using the new method the glaciologists extract the air trapped in the ice core completely and the CO₂ contained in the air is thoroughly cleaned. The different isotopes of the CO₂ are analysed in a mass spectrometer and from this data the origin of the carbon dioxide can be derived.

Researchers suggested back in the eighties that this puzzle could be solved using an isotopic "CO₂ fingerprint." However, it had so far not been possible to make a precise analysis of the carbon dioxide trapped in the Antarctic ice due to the technical hurdles. The glaciologists and the climate researchers at the Universities of Bern and Grenoble and of the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research have now managed a breakthrough with their study.

Development of future scenarios

"The new data have already enabled us to revise and improve a few theories about the possible reasons for CO₂ fluctuations. Measurement data from the past enable us to gain a clearer idea about how the climate must have looked at the end of the Ice Age," says Jochen Schmitt. And now the data must be compared with the results from climate models to verify and further develop the models. "In addition to the scientific curiosity about how our Earth functioned in the past, the main question to be asked is how the Earth will develop under the influence of man," explains Jochen Schmitt. These are important scenarios for the future because the CO₂ content in the atmosphere has never been anywhere near as high over the past 800,000 years as today, says the climate researcher.
