4 Ways To Keep Clean When Camping

For some the allure of camping is tamped down by the personal hygiene realities of camping. The thought of sleeping in a tent with a bunch of stinky people isnt a pleasant thought, to say nothing of sleeping in a sleeping bag with your own stinky self. This, however, does not have to be case. You can stay clean and smelling like roses.

1. Camp Grounds:

Camping doesnt have to mean hiking out days away from any civilization. There are plenty of camp grounds with amenities like bathrooms and showers. Many even have electricity. You may be thinking that these are just the camp grounds for RVs off the side of the road, but they arent. Most camp grounds have areas specifically for camping tents and there are plenty of camp grounds located right on the edge of a natural preserve, far from traffic and fast food. Youre right in middle of nature and have easy access to hiking trails and other camping activities, but dont have to forgo niceties like toilets and showers.

2. Camping Showers:

If you want to get away from everyone and camp in the wilderness, bring along a battery powered camp shower. You can either carry a small tank of water (4 gallons or so) or put a hose into a water source, such as a river or lake. Many camp showers have propane heating units so you can even have a hot shower no matter where you are. And if you feel a little exposed, there are popup shower enclosures for privacy that work very much like your standard popup camping tent.

3. Rivers:

Dont feel like carrying around shower supplies in your camping gear? Do what our ancestors did. Find a river or lake and dive on in. You can even carry a bar of bio-degradable soap and bottle of bio-degradable shampoo and get really clean. One piece of advice, though. Some water sources may contain small parasitic creatures that may attempt to invade your body. There is some controversy over the accuracy of such claims, but its probably best to keep your underwear on, especially if its tight fitting, just in case.

4. Baby Wipes:

If you arent going to be anywhere near water, baby wipes or moist towelettes can help to keep you clean and at least somewhat fresh. Admittedly, this is no substitute for a nice hot shower and you cant really wash your hair, but it will wipe the dirt off and keep you from smelling too bad. Wipes are handy for cleaning up before a meal even if you arent using them for a full body wipe-down.

Of course, no matter what option you choose to maintain your hygiene while camping, a little can/stick of deodorant can go a long way to keep you from scaring away the wildlife.

Good hygiene used to be an concern with camping in the past, but with a little planning and some cool technology, keeping good hygiene in the wilderness is no longer an issue. No matter where you go, you can keep clean and fresh.
