Japan's post-quake business confidence falls: BoJ (AFP)

TOKYO (AFP) ? Japanese business confidence plunged in the months after the March 11 earthquake, turning negative for the first time in over a year, the Bank of Japan said in its quarterly Tankan survey Friday.

While firms expect conditions to improve by September, analysts warned that the pace of Japan's recovery was uncertain amid power shortages following the crisis at the tsunami-ravaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant.

Large manufacturer sentiment in June dropped to "minus 9" from "6" in March, a plunge of 15 points and the first negative reading in five quarters.

The reading was worse than the median forecast of "minus 7" by economists polled by Dow Jones Newswires.

The figure represents the percentage of companies saying business conditions are good minus those saying conditions are bad. The survey is taken into account by the BoJ when formulating monetary policy.

The March disasters devastated entire towns along the northeast coast and left 23,000 dead or missing while wreaking havoc on Japanese industry, pushing the economy into recession in Japan's worst crisis since World War II.

The nation's biggest firms such as Sony and Toyota were forced to shutter plants and halt production due to shortages in electricity and parts after the disaster disrupted supply chains, sending output and exports tumbling.

The June survey showed sentiment among automakers, which were particularly hard hit due to a lack of components, plunged by a record 75 points to "minus 52".

The recent strength of the yen versus other major currencies is also a concern for firms, as it erodes overseas earnings when repatriated.

However, Japan's recovery has been seen to be quicker than expected, as companies approach normal production levels ahead of earlier forecasts amid expectations that reconstruction spending will boost the economy.

The survey showed that big companies expected sentiment to improve to plus two in the next survey in September.

"Business sentiment (among major manufacturers) is continuing to recover gradually, reflecting rebounding production," said Naoki Murakami, chief economist at Monex.

Recent data suggest the worst may be over following the disaster, say analysts. Industrial output posted the second-largest gain on record in May, with a 5.7 percent on-month rise.

However, the government warned this may have been partly driven by firms boosting production ahead of a government decree to reduce electricity consumption by 15 percent for three months starting Friday in a bid to avoid blackouts during the peak summer months amid reduced capacity.

"The focus will be on what effect the issue of a power supply shortage is going to have" on the economy, said NLI Research Institute senior economist Taro Saito.

"A V-shaped recovery was tipped as the supply chain has been restored earlier than expected, but it is unclear whether corporate activities will slow down in the July-September period due to power shortages."

Separately, data on Friday showed Japan's core consumer price index rose by 0.6 percent in May from a year earlier, boosted by surging energy prices and beating market expectations of a 0.5 percent rise.

The core consumer price index, which excludes volatile food prices, rose for the second consecutive month after gaining in April for the first time in more than two years on higher energy costs.

But analysts expect Japan's CPI to fall back into negative territory in coming months, reflecting an economy mired in deflation as falling prices encourage consumers to hold back on purchases.

Data on Friday showed Japan's unemployment rate fell to 4.5 percent in May from 4.7 percent in the previous month, with figures from disaster-hit northeastern Japan excluded, the government said.

Household spending in May fell by an inflation-adjusted 1.9 percent from a year earlier.

The Kitchen Table Writer: Two book recommendations

I'm just back from teaching in Oxford. The students there are so great and I always really enjoy my time there. Recently I have read two really good memoirs. One is called 'When A Crocodile Eats The Sun' by Peter Godwin. I met Peter when we were both speaking at the Words by the Water Festival in Keswick three or four years ago but it's only now that I've got around to reading his book. I thoroughly recommend it - it is beautifully written and totally absorbing. The portrait it paints of his parents is deeply moving - two extra-ordinarily brave, resilient and good humoured people. It really made me think that the generation who are now passing away were simply very much better people than we are now. I didn't want the book to end. It also told me so much about Zimbabwe which I could never have got from newspaper reports. Do read it. The other book I would recommend is 'Deny The Stars' by Jocelyn Hurdnall. It's a very different kind of book but again totally absorbing. The story it tells is shocking and moving and Jocelyn Hurdnall's writing is honest and direct. The book is a fitting tribute to her extra-ordinary son and also reveals the very real horror of what is happening in Palestine.

The Screaming Stone by J. P. Osterman

Publication Date: April 2011
List Price: $16.95

Review: Every family has secrets, but the McCarten family has a few more than most. Irish folklore combined with lies and secrets that span generations comprise J. P. Osterman's middle-grade novel, The Screaming Stone . Marcie and her older, teenage cousin Robbie have a wild sense of adventure. Longing to be future spies, Robbie and Marcie work together to uncover their family's secrets in hopes that by finding the truth they will one day bring peace and order to the McCarten family.

Dysfunction lies deep in Marcie's family. Her mother suffers from untreated mental illness causing her to be distant and abusive. Under the care of her grandparents, Marcie finds solace, but it is not enough. Robbie, her closest ally, is a socially challenged teen. Although his awkwardness drives her crazy, he is the closest thing she has to a real friend. As the entire McCarten clan gathers together after the death of a relative, Robbie and Marcie stumble upon a key that might just unlock the secrets that haunt their family and find enough treasure to save their family's land. By studying Irish folklore and embarking on a treasure hunt, Robbie and Marcie find much more than they'd expected.

The Screaming Stone is an entertaining read for middle school children. Osterman uses Irish folklore well in helping to create a fascinating treasure hunt. Certainly the primary storyline is suspenseful as Marcie and Robbie hunt for hidden treasure. But, the supplemental storylines are equally compelling. Marcie's mother suffers from mental illness, though it is a mystery as to the source of her problems. Late in the story it becomes clear that she is schizophrenic, but there is a turning point in her life that seems to have put her over the edge. Part of the mystery is coming to terms with Marcie's mother and understanding the lies that have created her past. Plus, Robbie's character is interesting as well. The book never reveals what is behind Robbie's awkward behavior and mannerisms, but he seems to be somewhere on the autism spectrum. He is highly creative and inventive, but lacks the social skills needed to function in regular situations. Overall, these unique characters along with the mystery and suspense make The Screaming Stone a good book.

Only a few elements of the story are somewhat bothersome. The time period of the story is unclear. Upon reading a novel such as this, it is automatically assumed it is current unless the author makes the time period evident. However, this is not the case here. For some reason, this was trying as a reader. It isn't until the book is nearly halfway over that it becomes clear that the story takes place in the late 1960's or early 1970's. This is evident when they visit the library and use the card catalog (something of which today's middle school students have no knowledge) and when they watch the Red Skelton Hour on television - which ended in 1971. It is uncertain why the author chose this time period for the novel, and for that reason it probably would be better received if it were current so kids could relate to the characters better. A time period for historical fiction should have a purpose. Plus, the inconsistencies in Robbie's character are frustrating. For example, he is clearly very bright and reads books from the adult reference section of the library, but yet he is unable to read common words. While in the library, Robbie says

"Here's a book called The First Book of Caves. The subject card says it has ill-us-tra-tra-"

"Illustrations," I said, reading beside him.

Robbie is too bright to not be able to read such a common word. His behavior is also very inconsistent, which could be related to his "issues", however since they are never really explained that is frustrating as well. Being that it takes place in the early 1970's, autism was not the common word that it is today which might explain the author's avoidance of labeling Robbie's behavior disorder. Plus, schizophrenia along with most mental illnesses was not as understood during that time period which might explain the lack of treatment Marcie's mother receives. But, in the end, these are somewhat trivial concerns because the mystery, family dynamics - particularly with the grandfather, and lore make The Screaming Stone a solid book for kids to enjoy.

Oracle puts $2.6 bln price tag on Google Java infringement (Digital Trends)

Google Android Logo

In a filing yesterday with the U.S. District Court in the Northern District of California, database giant Oracle revealed is seeking some $2.6 billion in damages from Google for alleged Java patent infringements in Google?s Android mobile operating system. The damages figure is based on estimates from Boston University finance professor Iain Cockburn, who is serving as Oracles damages expert.

Oracle also claimed Google has intentionally misinterpreted Cockburn?s analysis of damages to Oracle in an effort to make Oracle?s case seem unfair and unreasonable. Earlier this month, Google revealed that it might be forced to pay Oracle anywhere from $1.4 billion to $6.1 billion if it were to lose the case. Google?s interpretation of potential damages was based Cockburn?s assessment. Oracle refutes several of Google?s points, and maintains Cockburn?s methodology?and $2.6 billion figure?is based on ?accepted economic principles and the law of patent and copyright infringement.

Oracle sued Google last August over Android?s Java virtual machine, which Oracle claims infringes on copyrights and patents it acquired when it bought Sun Microsystems back in 2010. Oracle?s infringement claims are being reviewed by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office; so far, some of the claims have held up, but several have been ruled invalid.

?Over the course of four years, Google engaged in three rounds of licensing negotiations with Sun in connection with Android,? Oracle wrote in its filing. ?Google repeatedly rejected the reasonable licensing terms that Sun offered and ultimately chose to willfully infringe Oracle?s intellectual property and release the Java-based Android platform.?

The litigation is still in relatively early stages, although Reuters has reported a trial could get underway by November.

In an unrelated development, Oracle has also agreed to buy Pillar Data Systems, and enterprise-oriented data storage company. Pillar?s majority owner is Oracle CEO Larry Ellison. The acquisition won?t involve any up-front cash, but will be handed as a 100 percent ?earn out? deal?Oracle doesn?t expect the earn-out will have a material impact on Oracle?s financial results. The acquisition was led by an independent committee of Oracle?s board of directors.

The Big C Season 2: Cathy's Cancer is Out of the Bag Now What? (omg!)

When Cathy (Laura Linney) found out she had melanoma on The Big C last season, she kicked her husband out of the house, bought a convertible and wasn't afraid to tell anyone how she really felt.

What she didn't do was tell her family and friends about her life-altering diagnosis (save for her disgruntled neighbor, Marlene, who later committed suicide).

Months later, Cathy's cancer is out in the open ? for the most part ? and now that she has been forced to face her disease, she's also ready to fight it.

VIDEO: The Big C's Adam acts out in anger and frustration in Season 2

"It's been a fun direction to go in since she was a little bit in denial the first season. Now it's like, 'What are my options? What do I have to do,'" creator/executive producer Darlene Hunt tells TVGuide.com. "Obviously, Cathy is the same person, but she's being faced with things that she never thought she'd be faced with so it's fun to see her grow and change."

Although Cathy has progressed from denial to anger, her combative nature will remain intact and inform how she handles the cancer around her loved ones. "You started the last season with her turning into someone who was a little ballsier than you maybe could have imagined her before the start of Season 1," Hunt says. "Now, she's not going to let anyone or anything stand in her way. She's going to be a little mouthier and a little more honest with friends than I think she would have been previously."

The Big C season finale: Is Cathy ready to fight?

Cathy's denial is completely behind her, though."There's such a thing as needing a little bit of healthy denial when you're going through cancer treatment, to just really believe yourself to be getting better no matter what the truth may be," Hunt says. "You're definitely going to see her try to navigate that, which is to stay hopeful sometimes at the expense of the reality."

Instead, the harsh reality of Cathy's situation will largely be left in the hands of her husband, Paul (Oliver Platt). Following her brief affair with Lenny (Idris Elba) and her north-of-the-border kiss with her doctor, Paul is back in the house and more than willing to be Cathy's "cancer-ierge," as Hunt says Platt has dubbed himself.

Hugh Dancy, Parker Posey join Showtime's The Big C

"We see them interact more as a couple who are fighting this together, and we get to see that in a really great way, but that also comes with its challenges," Hunt says. "We will explore the reality and challenges of medical bills and him trying to keep Cathy out of the frustration of dealing with that. That's a real burden on people going through medical treatment. We see him trying to take all that on himself."

This season Cathy will have multiple sources of support. After losing confidante Marlene at the end of last season, she will find a new friend in fellow cancer patient Lee, played by recurring guest star Hugh Dancy. "We knew early on that we really wanted her to form a relationship with another cancer patient," Hunt says. "Going through an illness and having someone else who truly knows what the experience is like is really special and unique and he plays that role so beautifully, and with humor."

Check out photos from The Big C

However, just as Cathy reconnects with Paul and forges new bonds, one of her strongest relationships will take a dark turn when her brother, Sean (John Benjamin Hickey), finally finds out. "We saw them come together a lot last year, but Sean finding out that news is going to threaten that closeness and then we might have to work to get them back together," Hunt says. "We really need to explore what his reaction will be because he was the one person she was the most concerned about telling."

Although her coming out will have both upsides and downsides, behind the scenes everyone is happy that she's finally come clean.

"Strangely, this season seems to have flowed a little bit easier," Hunt says. "I think the fact that the cat's out of the bag has actually made the writing of the season a little easier that when it was a secret."

The Big C returns on Monday at 10:30/9:30c on Showtime.

Experts warn of growth of 'shadow IT' - Journal of Technology and ...

Businesses must focus on data protection as staff increasing use mobile devices for business purpose

Industry experts have warned of an increase in unauthorised IT systems within organisations as IT departments fail to keep pace with employees? technology demands and the consumerisation of IT.

Speaking at an event organised by Vodafone Global Enterprise, Sukhi Gill, HP enterprise services chief technologist for Europe, said there has been an increase of ?shadow IT?, whereby employees are working around IT departments and company security policies to access corporate data using consumer mobile applications and cloud-based services on personal devices.

Gill said enterprises are falling behind employee demand: ?CIOs are not getting money from the board, there is a backlog of projects and consumers are blaming devices.?

He added that enterprises need to rewrite legacy applications beyond e-mail clients to make them more like a consumer experience. But legal considerations still act as a barrier.

Legal complications stall mobilisation

HP?s legal department is grappling with who is liable if a corporate network is compromised via an employee-owned device.

?The legal department is blaming the end user for corporate downtime and still trying to decide what contract to make them sign,? said Gill.

While contractual issues are yet to be resolved, Gill advises companies to accept that consumerisation of IT has happened and to start trials of mobilising some non-core applications, such as giving field workers access to some corporate data and services.

IT departments must work with users

Nicholas McQuire, research director for Europe in enterprise mobility at analyst IDC, said customer-facing mobile apps are a priority for many businesses, forcing some marketing departments to hire app designers to develop products, ?flying under the radar of the IT department? and bypassing IT governance.

This means IT departments need to work more closely with users to protect sensitive data.

?The key performance indicators (KPIs) for IT used to be measured by availability. There is a transition going on. Equally there will be performance-based measurement around how users perform,? he said.

McQuire said companies must segment applications before upgrading to new operating systems, such as Windows 7, to decide what applications should be mobilised and which need to be secured to protect data.

Making mobile technology work for the business

Paul Domnick, CIO at law firm Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, said companies have focused attention on protecting infrastructure and systems instead of sensitive data. ?The elephant in the room is the need to protect data on multiple platforms at the same time to allow the technology to be exploited,? he said.

Despite being generally ?scared? of deploying mobile apps, Freshfields has recently enabled a remote time-recording app to allow lawyers to record their working hours more easily.

The company also started using enterprise social network, Yammer two years ago in a pilot with 12 IT staff. The IT department was forced to prevent attachments as the user base grew rapidly to 56. Now a quarter of the firm uses the tool for sharing news, company knowledge and even mobile app recommendations.

While Domnick believes platforms such as Yammer allow employees to self-support devices to an extent, the proliferation of personal consumer devices will have an impact on support resources.

?At some point, the firm is expecting something like Apple?s Genius Bar, perhaps in the form of video support,? said Domnick.

But beyond the firm?s spend on IT people, Domnick said his biggest spend is on security hardware, software and networks.

Educate staff about mobile security risks

Bryan Littlefair, global chief information security officer at Vodafone Group, said companies have a responsibility to educate employees about security risks to allow personal mobile devices to be supported.

But he believes there should be a shift to protect data rather than individual devices. ?Security professionals need to accept being at the losing end of argument and start rolling out enterprise mobility programmes,? Littlefair said.

Tips for supporting mobile devices?

?

Nicholas McQuire, research director for Europe in enterprise mobility at analyst IDC, gives four tips for moving towards supporting employee-owned mobile devices

  1. Accept the notion of risk. When working with frameworks to allow employees to bring their own devices into workplace, it comes down to managing risk. You need the right management tools to give visibility.
  2. Ask where the company wants to be in three years? time? What is driving the IT strategy? Mobile devices must fit into that.
  3. Analyse the user base and decide who should get what.
  4. Start small. As a starting point, look at user groups and target certain tasks and apps that are non-core to move to mobile devices.

The Realities Of Home Staging Honolulu | HealthPro List

Home staging Honolulu seems to be on its way to being the industry standard in this field. The real estate market is very competitive right now and people are wanting to get this service for the homes they are trying to sell. This services have been proven to be successful elsewhere, and Honolulu is certainly no exception to that rule.

Many home stagers you see fist got their start in the interior designing trade. They now have came into this market as there is, at the time, more job security for the talents they have. Most of them had made careers as interior design specialists, so they know what they?re doing.

When looking around for someone to do this, his is something you?ll want to bear n mind. You?ll want to be aware of how much of an expert staff they have in the company. There are some here that definitely are rather expensive, so you?ll need to know if they are worth what they charge.

Usually though, companies that offer this type of service will charge a hefty price when they are aware that customers will pay for it. This is an industry where the customer really does get what they pay for. You can thank the companies themselves for this, because out Of the need for staying realistically competitive with each other comes the fact that you will always get a fair price.

The idea of temporarily enhancing the look of your home is an idea and a practice that has been around for quite some time now. It has just been coming into its own though because of the state of the real estate market. This is not however a phenomenon that is doomed to have a short life, because when the market picks back up again, home staging will still be an integral part of selling homes.

If your house has been listed for a few months now, you might want to look further into this as your situation probably won?t change if you don?t. Many others like you have with few, if any, complaints. There is no reason to believe that this won?t work for you.

There are many such companies in the area to choose from. They are experienced and will talk you through the process if you are new to this. Chances are very good that you will not be disappointed with your decision. Read more about: Home Staging Honolulu

Book Review: Love on the Left Bank by Ed van der Elsken ...

Publishers have responded to the demand for collectible photobooks in a variety of ways. Errata Editions reissues highly valued titles, like Paul Graham's Beyond Caring (reviewed here last week), but resizes them to fit a uniform template. Not that I don't want the whole collection. The reissue efforts of Dewi Lewis Publishing may not have the depths of the growing Errata catalog (up to a dozen and counting in the Books on Books series), but they have created magnificent facsimiles of a number of classic photo books, from William Klein's New York (its reissue now out-of-print and collectible) to Martin Parr's The Last Resort (reviewed here last month), to this week's title.

Dutch photographer Edward van Elsken published over 20 photobooks in his lifetime. His 1956 classic Love on the Left Bank is a fine example of the photobook as visual literature, for in spirit and texture it comes off as a marriage between Kerouac's On the Road and Robert Frank's The Americans (separate if related works - advantage, Frank).

This fictionalized book-length photo essay follows the ill-fated love affair of a Mexican hitchhiker with a woman of Paris named Ann against the backdrop of a Left Bank that was then one of the great epicenters of art and culture. High-contrast, grainy black and white film captures the excitement and energy of youth and the city, and the varied page layouts keep the narrative moving. Spreads of jagged smaller panels feature plenty of white space, and Parisian shop-fronts that look as if they were made by an Atget who didn't have time to stop and dream. These alternate with full-bleed two-page closeups of lovers and other strangers. The images are at once historical and timeless, though some of the Gill Sans-laid text has dated, with exchanges like, "You dance like an African negress" answered by "I'd like to have a child by a negro."

"Ann" was actually Australian-born dancer/artist Vali Myers, who moved to Paris in 1949 and lived at New York's infamous Chelsea hotel for a while - a few of her paintings in fact still adorn the hotel's storied walls. Myers' drawings are featured throughout the book as well. If Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris transports you to the Paris of the twenties, then the gritty photos and rhythmic page layouts of Love on the Left Bank will transport you to 1956.

EU to revise Schengen border deal

Tunisian migrants held in France, 5 May 11Many Tunisian illegal migrants have entered Europe this year amid unrest in North Africa
Related Stories

Countries in the EU's Schengen open border zone will be able to reimpose restrictions to prevent an influx of migrants, EU leaders have agreed.

The measure is a response to pressure from France and Italy, who have been wrangling over thousands of illegal migrants from strife-torn North Africa.

Italy allowed many French-speaking Tunisians to travel on to France.

The EU will now create a new mechanism for the 25-nation Schengen zone, to allow for temporary border controls.

Schengen abolished routine passport checks across most of the EU and is regarded by Brussels as one of the bloc's greatest achievements.

At their Brussels summit on Friday EU leaders asked the European Commission to revise the Schengen system so that countries could reintroduce border controls temporarily "in a truly critical situation".

The new mechanism will allow countries facing unusual migration pressures to escalate their border controls, "without jeopardising the principle of free movement of persons".

"As a very last resort... a safeguard clause could be introduced to allow the exceptional reintroduction of internal border controls," the summit conclusions say.

Such a move would be based on "a common [EU] assessment" and would be "for a strictly limited scope and period of time".

The European Commission has been asked to present plans for the mechanism in September.

Schengen requires the member states to apply uniform controls on the EU's external borders.

Schengen agreementIn June 1985, leaders from Germany, France, Luxembourg, Belgium, and the Netherlands met in Schengen, Luxembourg, and agreed gradually to abolish checks at shared bordersFull convention came into effect a decade later, also covering Italy, Spain, Portugal and GreeceCreated single external border, harmonised some rules on asylum and visas, enhanced police and judicial co-operation and established shared information databaseIrish Republic and UK co-operate in certain aspects of Schengen but border checks retainedAustria joined agreement in 1997, followed by Nordic countries in 2000. Nine new EU member states were incorporated in 2007 and Switzerland in 2008

Most EU states are in Schengen, as are three non-EU countries: Iceland, Norway and Switzerland.

Five EU countries remain outside: Bulgaria, Cyprus, the Irish Republic, Romania and the UK.

Schengen currently allows for the temporary reimposition of border controls in special cases to ensure public order, and that has been done for some major sports events.

But now Brussels wants such temporary measures to be spelled out clearly on an EU-wide level.

The EU leaders also pledged to adopt a Common European Asylum System (CEAS) this year, to provide common EU-wide procedures for asylum seekers.

UK Prime Minister David Cameron expressed relief that the conclusions did not call for more EU burden-sharing in the area of asylum.

Under the EU's Dublin II Regulation asylum requests have to be handled by the country where the asylum seeker first arrived in the EU.

Greece, Italy and Malta have complained that the current system puts an unfair burden on them.

Mr Cameron said he had been worried before the summit "about potential proposals to suspend the Dublin arrangements that allow us to return asylum seekers to the country from which they have come".

"Britain and Germany together made sure that these proposals aren't even referred to in any way in the Council conclusions. I think that is important. We want controlled migration in Europe and controlled migration above all in Britain."

Low Cost Auto Insurance. Great Coverage on Any Budget. | Car Insurance

6:40 am Uncategorized

If you are part of the average American family, chances are that the cost of car insurance is becoming more and more of an issue for you. Well, likewise, there are a growing number of people looking for low cost auto insurance. However, certain questions remain regarding the worth of the low cost auto insurance policy that you are buying.

After all, low cost auto insurance is wonderful when paying the bill, but a mistake while choosing the car insurance company could land you in a nightmare. So when it comes to car insurance, don?t just take the cheapest quote you get. You need to do a little research about the insurance company that is offering the low cost auto insurance?that?s step One.

Step Two is to find ways that may help reduce your car insurance costs without compromising on the coverage. Here are some ways to do that:
Look at your deductible amount, because this is the amount to which the cost of your policy is directly related. In short, a higher deductible amount means a cheaper insurance policy. So if you have a good driving record and are prepared to pay a higher amount in the event of a claim, you can save money by increasing your deductible.

Certain types of cars cost more to insure. Keep in mind that certain types of cars?such as sports cars and the more unusual and expensive models?cost more to insure. So it is wisest to find out which makes and models these are before you buy car insurance.
Be safe. This may sound obvious, but drive carefully. After all, your driving record is likely to significantly impact your car insurance risk profile. If you?ve had multiple accidents or bookings in the recent past, chances are you won?t get low cost auto insurance. Moreover, safe drivers can be eligible for high discounts.
Install safety and anti theft devices in your car. Once again, these affect your risk profile. If your car is less at risk of theft, it should be cheaper to insure. Make sure your car insurance company knows about the devices you install.
Review the policy carefully. When it comes to renewing your car insurance, review the terms instead of blindly paying. You may find that certain coverage areas overlap with those in any other insurance policy that you may have bought, so these can be eliminated from your car insurance, thereby reducing the cost.
Shop around. Once again at renewal time, browse the Internet or use NetQuote.com, who can provide you with quotes from a wide range of companies. Remember that car insurance rates can vary as much as 300% between companies for the same coverage areas. By using an online service that provides you with multiple quotes, you can save hundreds of dollars a year. Also, your current car insurance company may have lower rates for new customers that you may be able to negotiate for yourself as a valued customer.
Bundle up. Many insurers offer discounts for multiple policies. In other words, if you insure your house with a certain company and approach them for car insurance as well, you may find yourself facing a large discount offer.
Reduce drive time. Drivers who average 40 miles or less a day qualify for low mileage discounts with most car insurance companies. If you don?t fall in this bracket, consider carpooling a couple of days a week to reduce your car?s mileage. Also, using public transportation instead of driving can help you further reduce the miles.

One final myth-buster: people always say car insurance is hugely expensive, but you have a chance to rectify that if you are smart enough to explore all the low cost auto insurance options. So get cracking!

Fact: You may not need it.

The advantage of these policies, it is necessary to purchase the appropriate circumstances, agree to it before you need to verify that what you need.

When you provide your insurance company rental car you your length of time they are rather than the price of each car, make sure that you understand that providing a daily basis.

This happened to me. Vehicle, please let me know that somewhere close to 22 dollars the cost of auto insurance. When I returned my bill by adding more than $ 150, I kept the car for a week. Jimmy is a very unhappy boy, when I tell them that this is not fair, they just told me I had that I agree with it. I say good, this is the last time this happen to me now I guarantee you, I will not buy another car rental company has no insurance.

Since I have an expensive car comprehensive insurance, I have a good car insurance policy, including a car I will be transferred to any vehicle I drove.

Using my personal insurance to cover the rental car is a high deductible only if the problem I ever caused an accident, I do not mind paying, I'm a safe driver I not.

Car rental agent to purchase insurance if you have an accident is that there is no deduction, the company immediately and take care of everything.

If you do not have insurance from your rental car companies, they are all your credit card expenses, individual insurance companies would reimburse you.

Jimmy is good if you have coverage on your car insurance company might not need insurance from car rental companies, he said. However, this is a decision you make, feel the need to do your good deeds in this case.

Tablet war heats up as Asia challenges iconic iPad (AFP)

SINGAPORE (AFP) ? A tablet war is heating up in Asia as companies from China, South Korea and Taiwan challenge the dominance of Apple's iPad on features and price, analysts said.

Asia is a major battleground because of the presence of alternatives offered by top global brands like South Korea's Samsung as well as cheaper choices from dozens of smaller firms, many of them from China.

By one estimate, Asia will account for about a third of tablet sales by 2015, triggering a race for market share by big and unknown brands alike.

Chinese technology firm Huawei became the latest company to jump on the bandwagon when it launched the MediaPad, which has a seven-inch (178-millimetre) screen and is powered by Google's Android 3.2 Honeycomb operating system.

Making its global debut at this week's CommunicAsia trade fair in Singapore, the MediaPad sports Qualcomm's dual-core 1.2GHz processor.

It is just 10.55 mm (0.4 inches) thick and weighs 390 grams (0.86 pounds), making it much lighter than an iPad2.

"With the Huawei MediaPad, we are demonstrating yet again that design, functionality and performance is within everyone's reach," said Victor Xu, chief marketing officer of Huawei Device.

The market is already abuzz with models such as Samsung's Galaxy Tab, the HTC FlyerTM by Taiwan's leading smartphone maker HTC and the ZTE Light tablet by Chinese manufacturer ZTE.

Add to these other Western brands such as the BlackBerry Playbook by Canada's Research in Motion and a growing array of inexpensive gadgets from little-known vendors and the field is widening up for competition.

"We see Apple?s market share declining -- in a growing market -- as credible alternatives emerge from a variety of manufacturers," said Tim Renowden, an analyst with technology research firm Ovum.

"The emergence of lower-cost tablets, predominantly running Google's Android operating system, will be an important opportunity for Asian manufacturers," he told AFP.

He said Samsung and HTC "are arguably the front runners with their experience producing smartphones".

However, Chinese technology companies such as Huawei and ZTE "are also actively pursuing market share and can potentially succeed with lower-cost devices", he said.

In addition, traditionally PC-focused companies like Acer and Asus of Taiwan have also launched some interesting tablet products.

"All of these players are really competing against each other, more than they are competing with Apple," Renowden said.

Industry research firm Gartner has said the iPad accounted for a hefty 84 percent of the total 17.6 million tablets sold worldwide in 2010, with that share tipped to decline to 69 percent of 70 million to be sold this year.

Bryan Ma, an analyst with technology industry consultancy IDC, said although the iPad is expected to remain a major player in Asia, the region is different from Western markets.

Samsung is strong in South Korea because of nationalist sentiment, while the massive China market is awash in inexpensive tablets known as "white box" devices because of their obscure brands.

"In that sense there's an interesting activity that's giving Apple some competition. A lot of these guys are low-priced players," Ma told AFP.

"They might not necessarily have that cool cachet that Apple has but... these Chinese vendors are selling these products overseas, to other developing markets as well like Indonesia, parts of the Middle East and Africa."

Apple's advantage is that it has cultivated an image as a "cool product, and in many cases there is that status symbol element," Ma said.

"It's in the local culture. People will aspire to that social status to carry an Apple product."

Ovum's Renowden said the Asia-Pacific market was big enough for several players, forecasting tablet sales to reach 50 million units in 2015 out of a global total of 150 million.

"The market is certainly big enough for a number of players to be profitable," he said.

"But competition is already fierce and standing out from the crowd is important, as is maintaining good relationships with distributors, both retail and through telco partners."

Ma expects some competitors to fall by the wayside.

"Frankly, the market is over-saturated, there's way too many vendors trying to participate in this market than there is demand for," he said.

"We expect that there are going to be vendors that will find that they are not shipping enough volumes and they will eventually back out of the market both this year and probably in the upcoming year," he added.

"There's going to be some sifting of the market, the dust still needs to settle a bit because it's still very, very early stages."

Ivory Coast Ouattara troops kill 8, some executed: U.N. (Reuters)

ABIDJAN (Reuters) ? Former rebels loyal to Ivory Coast President Alassane Ouattara were last week still committing abuses such as executions and torture in which they killed at least 8 people, the United Nations said on Thursday.

Pro-Ouattara forces also wounded several others and detained at least 30, some of whom were subjected to torture or abuse, in that week, the U.N. mission, ONUCI, said in a statement.

"ONUCI urges the Ivorian authorities to proceed with investigations of crimes committed by (Ouattara's troops) and ongoing abuses by some uncontrolled elements," U.N. mission human rights officer Guillaume Ngefa said in a statement.

The world's top war crime prosecutor said forces loyal to former Ivory Coast leader Laurent Gbagbo as well as those backing his rival, Ouattara, committed war crimes in the post-election violence, as he opened a formal investigation into it on Thursday.

International Criminal Court (ICC) Prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo said at least 3,000 people were killed and 520 people were arbitrarily detained in the violence.

Gbagbo is being detained in northern Ivory Coast, awaiting a domestic trial for alleged economic crimes, although Ouattara also wants him tried in the ICC for crimes against humanity.

Gbagbo's supporters complain that not a single Ouattara soldier has yet been arrested, despite evidence of grave abuses, including a massacre in territory under their control in the west of the country that killed hundreds.
