How to Dispute errors on your credit report

Tip #19: Dispute errors on your credit report

?

Contact each of the three major credit bureaus -? TransUnion, Equifax, and Experian ? and get copies of your credit reports and credit scores.? Carefully read over the reports and note any errors.? In writing, contact the credit bureaus and ask that mistakes be removed or investigated.

?

This is called a dispute letter and once it is received, credit bureaus have to investigate your dispute within thirty days of receiving your letter.? It is important to keep a copy of your letter and it is important to note the date the letter was sent.? You should not be accusatory or abusive in your letter ? calmly and clearly state the problem and request an investigation.

?

Note that you are aware the agency is required to investigate the claim within thirty days and note that you will follow up.? Be sure that you do follow up with the issues you raised in your letter ? just because the agency investigates does not always mean that your credit report will end up error-free.

?

Many credit bureaus now make it possible for you to correct errors on your credit report online ? and many have information on their web sites that tells you exactly how disputes must be handled to be effectively removed.? It is important that you follow this information exactly so that the inaccuracies on your credit report are removed promptly and your credit score is updated as soon as possible.

The 45-year-old actor radically transforms his body into 100 percent muscle for the film, in which his character goes up against ... Tyler Perry.

Yup, the actor-director plays the titular hero, based on author James Patterson's famed detective and played by Morgan Freeman in Kiss the Girls and Along Came a Spider.

Big shoes to fill for Perry. Check out the trailer:

The thriller, directed by The Fast and the Furious' Rob Cohen, finds Cross investigating murders committed by ex-military hitman, Matthew "The Butcher" Sullivan (Fox).

Sullivan eventually targets Alex's wife, obviously.

Sky-divers drop from blimp to demo Google Glass eyewear

1 day

Google co-founder?Sergey Brin turned up at the I/O keynote in San Francisco Wednesday, and revealed that a trio of basejumpers were hanging out in a blimp overhead. Brin's instructions: Jump out of the airship, land on the roof of the Moscone Center, and deliver a box containing a pair of the augmented-reality?glasses.?

Because this didn't seem complicated enough, Brin asked for mountaineers to rappel down the walls of the center, then hand off the package to cyclists, who rode into the auditorium, as you can see in the video released late Wednesday:

It was a pretty crazy stunt, though one that didn't reveal much about Google Glass except that it stays on during extreme sports, will come in a variety of styles, and weighs less than a standard pair of sunglasses.

It was also revealed that Google will allow attendees of this week's conference to pre-order a version of Google Glass for $1,500. This model will be a rough edition, not the final product, and is intended for serious developers only.

Shark Protection, Protecting the Sharks or Humans From Sharks?

Now firstly the spark came from a statement being made by some dive operators, conservationists and a few others by having a paddle/ boat ride out to the nets as a sort of ?memorial service? for the unfortunate sharks that lost their lives. However it was the call for the removal all together of the nets at Scottburgh that got some people upset.

Firstly most of the people doing the ?protesting? if you will, were and are surfers. They are also part of the shark diving community and of course with the Aliwal shoal being so close depend on this for their livelihood. Sharks, like any apex predator are essential for the balance of the ecozystem. Studies have been done and the facts are there, nobody is disputing this, well definitely not the surfers. Straight away the other argument becomes, what about the thousands of people in Scottburgh that rely so heavily on the holiday seasons for their livelihood.

Let?s be honest, how much do the nets actually do to prevent sharks coming into the bay? These same researchers and operators know this; they have tracked big tiger sharks right into the bay within meters of the point rocks. My theory on this is that the older sharks have, after many years of being caught and released in the nets, learnt the dangers and that if they stay clear have nothing to fear. This is why the aforementioned sharks recently caught were juveniles and great whites, lured into the area by what was suspected to be a whale carcass. This would explain their lack of knowledge of the nets, but that is a debate for another time.

What I am getting at and why I mentioned earlier that the people who did the paddle out were surfers, is that a bit of finger pointing was happening because of a rant from a surfer. So immediately it was like the surfers were against the shark nets being removed for their own benefit. This led to the argument that these surfers will still surf at beaches that do not have shark nets anyway. From the surfers side this is true, but very rarely alone, in murky/ brown water or if the waves are sub par. I for one have on many occasion surfed Scottburgh alone in all of the above conditions (sometimes all at once), not feeling completely safe but enough so to go ?ace out?. We know that those big sharks come right inside the nets, but adding to the theory that just like they have learnt not to fear the nets; they have learnt that humans aren?t on the menu.

So basically it boils down to peace of mind. Removing the nets is not going to stop the surfers jumping in the water; we know the dangers and accept them. But, what about the youngsters wanting to get into the sport, are their parents going to allow them into the water? The inlanders making their annual pilgrimage to the coast, will they choose Scottburgh? Will it become a ghost town, catering only to the scuba diving fraternity? What about the recent report that a beach in Oz somewhere removed its drumlines and had its first attack in 25 years shortly after, coincidence?

So then the argument continues with, how come the same people that chum for shark diving, actively bringing more sharks into the area, are calling for their removal? What are the motives? Are they really just concerned with conservation or do more sharks, mean more divers and so more money? That wouldn?t really be fair if the rest of the area suffers because the holiday makers dry up. Remember, it is for peace of mind. Most of these people know nothing about the sea and sharks except what the media (who sensationalize attacks to sell) and movies have told them. Some have such a fear that they won?t even enter the ocean beyond a certain depth. There is no teaching or compromising with them. The conservationists have tried telling the commercial fishermen not to kill sharks, because they believe fewer sharks, more fish. Dumb theory, but beliefs are beliefs and a lot of them won?t stop no matter what! So they think, let?s remove the nets instead, we can convince the holiday makers rather and increase shark numbers that way.

So to finish, yes the nets dent the shark numbers and yes, they kill other animals too. It is harsh and we wish there was another way. Should we go the drumline route, where sharks are actively culled? Of course not, that is ludicrous, actively kill them? Well take out all the sharks and there will be no attacks, problem solved. Many fishermen have taken this approach already.

No of course not, all the residents are asking is for a few hundred meters of netting to protect or even create the illusion (what ever your stance is) that the beaches are safe. It is similar to a fenced game reserve like Kruger; hundreds of animals die every year trying to cross the fence line. It is sad, but what if the fences were not there? Poachers would come and go as they please. Elephants would wander onto neighbouring crop farms and be shot. Wait, we can drop the fences then explain to the poachers that rhino horn has no medicinal properties!! Maybe tell the farmer that he can take a small loss, it will be fine!! They will listen, won?t they?

It is about balance, just like we want and need balance in our oceans and other reserves; we too need balance between humans (who after all, like it or not are part of this world too) and the wildlife they share the world with. Fight the balance at your peril, it is about co-inhabiting and co-operating, without it we are all doomed, man and beast both?

Mississippi's sole abortion clinic sues over new law

TUPELO, Mississippi (Reuters) - The lone abortion facility in Mississippi asked a federal court on Wednesday to block a new state law that will require doctors who perform the controversial procedure to have admitting privileges at a local hospital.

The law, set to take effect on Sunday, threatens to make Mississippi the only U.S. state without an abortion clinic. Some anti-abortion state lawmakers say they hope that would mean an end to abortions there.

The state's sole clinic, Jackson Women's Health Organization, says the new measure is unconstitutional because it aims to effectively ban abortions in Mississippi.

The clinic is also seeking immediate relief from the court to be given more time to try to comply with the law, according to the lawsuit filed on its behalf by the New York-based Center for Reproductive Rights.

Clinic representatives said they began applying for the necessary privileges after Mississippi's Republican Governor Phil Bryant signed the measure into law in mid-April. But they have struggled to obtain them at any of the half-dozen hospitals within a 30-minute drive of the clinic, located in Jackson, the state capital.

"We have been attempting to comply with the law, but we just have not had adequate time for the privileges to come through, if they come through," clinic owner Diane Derzis told Reuters. "We've not been turned down outright, except on a few hospitals that had religious beliefs that didn't coincide."

The state legislator who sponsored the law said he was not surprised by the legal challenge, and he felt confident it would withstand the court test.

"It's been over 70 days since Gov. Bryant signed this legislation," Republican Representative Sam Mims said. "For them to say we don't have time, I just don't buy that argument."

Mississippi already has some of the country's strictest abortion laws and one of the lowest abortion rates. It also has the highest teen pregnancy rate in the United States - more than 60 percent above the national average in 2010.

The state became a battleground for reproductive rights last fall when voters weighed in on a constitutional "personhood" amendment that defined life as starting at the moment eggs are fertilized. Voters handed abortion opponents a setback by rejecting the proposed amendment.

Undeterred, state lawmakers this spring passed legislation requiring abortion providers to be board certified in obstetrics and gynecology and to have staff with admitting privileges at a nearby hospital.

Thirty-nine other states also require that OB-GYNs perform abortions, and nine others mandate hospital privileges, according to the Guttmacher Institute, a nonprofit organization dedicated to sexual and reproductive rights.

But Mississippi, which had as many as 14 abortion providers in the early 1980s, would be the first state without a single abortion clinic should the Jackson Women's Health Organization close, Guttmacher spokeswoman Rebecca Wind said.

UPCOMING INSPECTION

Inspectors from the Mississippi Department of Health, which is the state's licensing agency for abortion clinics, still are planning to check on the clinic's compliance with the law on Monday, agency spokeswoman Liz Sharlot said.

She declined to comment on Wednesday about the new lawsuit.

The clinic's main three doctors, who all travel from outside of Mississippi to see patients, are already board-certified OB-GYNs.

If the facility has not complied with the requirement for admitting privileges by the inspection, it will get 10 working days to submit a plan outlining how it will remedy the situation within a reasonable time frame, Sharlot said.

Sharlot said the definition of "reasonable" varies from case to case, leaving some uncertainty about how soon the clinic might be forced to close if it cannot comply. Sharlot noted that the abortion clinic has been aware of the law for months.

Mims had asked the department to deny Jackson Women's Health Organization a grace period. He said he did not "want to give the facility 10 extra days to perform abortions" and was consulting attorneys on the legality of such a move.

Mims said the law was intended to protect patients by ensuring that physicians are certified and able to follow them into a local hospital in emergency cases, but added if it also "causes Mississippi to have fewer abortions, then that is a positive result."

The Jackson Women's Health Organization has been providing services in Mississippi since 1996. Clinic spokeswoman Betty Thompson said about 2,000 women received abortions at the clinic between July 1, 2010 and June 30, 2011. The staff also provides state-mandated counseling services to clients, some of whom ultimately chose to keep their babies, she said.

The nearest clinics outside the state are located in Alabama, Tennessee, Arkansas and Louisiana. But Thompson said not all women will be able to access those facilities.

"It puts an undue burden on women of all classes and colors, Thompson said. "I see us going back to the early '70s and what happened to women who did not have access. They tried to induce it for themselves or they went to people who were not qualified to do the procedures, and they sometimes died."

Mims disputed that the measure could lead to such a scenario.

"I'm not at all worried," he said. "My hope is that the women that are making these choices will now choose life, that they will realize that life begins at conception."

Nature of Service Level Agreement In Web Hosting Services

??

In the online business domain, constant functioning of websites is very necessary indeed. Thus a web hosting company imparts a very significant place in the domain. Almost every online business owner comes in the agreement with a web hosting company to subscribe a range of credible, responsive and affordable hosting services. A term of agreement of SLA is an important entity of any hosting service a business subscribes. It accommodates a number of important factors you should consider before associating with the terms.

Terms of Agreements :

A well-defined SLA contains very precise term of the Agreement. The agreement depicts date of this Agreement and the maximum time period it lasts for. This document should have renewal arrangement under same terms. You make sure that the terms stated in the documents are precise and written in very clear language.

Support Services:

A web hosting company is said to be dedicated if it offers round the clock tech support to the clients. You should therefore make sure that the agreement papers should have precise description of the tech support services. Document asserts the mode of communication like phone, fax , email and others if any that are being used to offer the support.

Third Party Software Support:

Several service providers offer third party software support to the subscribers. These offerings are also based on various terms and conditions as well. These terms prohibit clients to install any third party software on the running server of the service provider without acquiring no objection certificate from the service provider. Agreement also states that if an issue arises due to the third party software, company has every right to disable the software for the time being.

Disk Space and Memory :

This is another important set of feature an agreement of a web hosting service provider should gave. The clause describes the amount of hard disk storage space

server takes and how company will manage the scenario if additional requirement for the disk space arises.

A Proper Back-up Plan :

Back-up plan as a term accommodates a very important space in a service level agreement. It defines the precise strategies of the service provider in case of a disaster occurs. It also states the fate of the lost files in due to disaster and the mechanism to be implemented to restore the lost or damaged data. The disaster recovery plans are mentioned to the clients with appropriate reports.?

Merkel buries euro bonds as summit tension rises

BERLIN/PARIS (Reuters) - German Chancellor Angela Merkel sought to bury once and for all the idea of common euro zone bonds on Tuesday, saying Europe would not share total debt liability "as long as I live", as the bloc's big four finance ministers met to narrow differences on how to solve a worsening debt crisis.

Two days before a crucial European Union summit, European Council President Herman Van Rompuy released a seven-page report on closer fiscal and banking union envisaging a euro zone treasury that would issue common debt in the medium term.

Merkel immediately stamped on the idea of mutualising debt - favored by France, Italy and Spain - at a meeting of lawmakers from her Free Democratic coalition partners in Berlin, according to people who attended the closed-door session.

"I don't see total debt liability as long as I live," she was quoted as saying, a day after branding the idea of euro bonds "economically wrong and counterproductive".

However Germany, the EU's biggest economy and paymaster, appeared ready to budge on using the euro zone's rescue funds more flexibly to help banks and reassure investors spooked by an increased risk of facing write-downs on government bonds.

The parties in Merkel's centre-right coalition proposed allowing a new permanent rescue fund, known as the European Stability Mechanism (ESM), to funnel aid directly to national bank rescue funds, according to a draft seen by Reuters.

That could spare governments like Spain's some of the political stigma of a bailout, although the loans would still be on the state's balance sheet, increasing its debt, and would still be subject to strict conditions.

More significantly, conservative floor leader Volker Kauder told another meeting of lawmakers that euro zone governments were discussing making it possible to remove preferred creditor status from the ESM rescue fund, participants said.

Neither Merkel nor Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble, who insisted on that treaty clause to make private bondholders take first losses in any future debt restructuring by bailed-out states, spoke out in favor of such a move, the sources said.

The provision has scared investors off buying Spanish debt since Madrid was promised a bailout of up to 100 billion euros ($125 billion) for its debt-stricken banks, since they fear a possible "haircut", driving bond yields up to alarm levels.

TENSIONS

Political tensions were already rising before word emerged of Merkel's dismissive comments.

Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti told parliament he would not just rubber stamp conclusions of the EU summit on Thursday and Friday and was ready to go on negotiating into Sunday evening if necessary to agree on measures to calm markets.

Cyprus, which on Monday became the fifth euro zone member to request a bailout, suffered a blow to its pride when the European Central Bank announced it would no longer accept the country's bonds as collateral - less than a week before Nicosia is due to assume the rotating EU presidency.

Euro zone finance ministers will hold a conference call on the Spanish and Cypriot aid requests on Wednesday, EU officials said.

Before that, finance ministers of the four biggest economies - Germany, France, Italy and Spain - were to discuss in Paris on Tuesday evening short-term crisis management and the proposals for closer long-term budgetary and banking integration.

Financial markets are on edge and international pressure for decisive action is rising but the summit, the 20th since the bloc's debt problems began in early 2010, is not expected to produce a lasting solution.

The finance ministers' session in Paris was called at such short notice - in an apparent rush to repair damage from a public rift between Merkel and leaders of the other three states when they met in Rome last Friday - that one finance minister's press staff only learned of the invitation on Tuesday morning.

The four finance chiefs were expected to seek more common ground before Merkel and French President Francois Hollande hold a pre-summit meeting on Wednesday.

HALF ITS ECONOMY

Cyprus, the 17-nation currency area's third smallest economy with just 1 million residents, added drama to a fraught week by applying for rescue loans on Monday.

Two euro zone sources said the East Mediterranean island, with an outsize financial sector heavily exposed to neighboring Greece, may need up to 10 billion euros in emergency financing, more than half its 17.3 billion euro annual output and equating to 10,000 euros per Cypriot.

While the sum is easily within the range of the European Financial Stability Facility (EFSF) bailout fund, it sets an awkward precedent and may lead to demands for private bondholders to take a write-down as they did in Greece.

Cyprus needs to plug a 1.8 billion euro capital shortfall in its second largest lender by June 30. Potential aid could be more comprehensive to cover fiscal requirements, Finance Minister Vassos Shiarly told Reuters.

Nicosia takes over the EU presidency for six months on July 1. But in Frankfurt, an ECB spokesman said that a downgrade of the Cyprus credit rating into speculative grade territory by all accepted rating agencies meant that Cypriot government securities no longer fulfilled the creditworthiness requirement.

This means banks cannot offer Cyprus government bonds in return for cash loans from the ECB.

Nicosia is believed to have applied to the EU for aid after exhausting attempts to secure loans from either China or Russia, a close ally, in an apparent effort to avoid the tough conditions and intrusive monitoring of an EU/IMF program.

"The exact number has not been decided yet. It was to be 6 billion for the state financing and 2 billion for the banks but that is optimistic - it is more likely to be seven and three - up to 10 billion euros in total," one euro zone official said.

On Monday, Spain formally requested up to 100 billion euros in rescue loans to recapitalize a banking sector that is weighed down by bad loans from a burst real estate bubble.

It is seeking to avoid the political humiliation and partial loss of sovereignty involved in a full state bailout program of the kind granted to Greece, Ireland and Portugal, even though the IMF and EU authorities will still have to monitor the aid.

Spanish and Italian bond yields rose again on Tuesday as skepticism set in before the EU summit. Spain had to pay the highest yields since last November to sell 3.08 billion euros in short-term debt as demand from its ailing banks dwindled.

CONTAGION

Investors want to see bold moves to underpin the European currency union and halt the inexorable contagion from one debt-stricken country to another. But with 27 EU countries and 17 in the euro zone, quick steps are one thing Europe can't take.

The Brussels summit is expected to agree on a growth package pushed by France worth around 130 billion euros ($162 billion) in infrastructure project bonds, reallocated regional aid funds and European Investment Bank loans.

Leaders will also discuss proposals for a banking union but while they are likely to agree to give the ECB power to supervise big cross-border banks, Merkel is resisting any joint deposit guarantee or common bank resolution fund.

In Washington, U.S. Treasury Under Secretary Lael Brainard, who has been handling financial diplomacy with Europe, urged EU leaders to put "more flesh on the bones" of their plans for tackling the debt crisis at this week's summit.

Pain Medications: Addiction and Fear of Becoming Addicted

What to know about becoming addicted to pain medications.

By Eric Metcalf, MPH
WebMD Feature

Many people taking medication to control chronic pain are afraid they'll become addicted to those drugs.

Some people do become addicted, and the results can be devastating. But there are ways to limit your risk.

Candy Pitcher of Cary, N.C., knows all about the fear of addiction. One summer day in 2003, a tree cutter working at Pitcher's home started to topple from his ladder. "If he hits the ground, he'll break his back. I have to catch him!" she thought.

Pitcher broke the man's fall, which crushed a vertebra in her upper back. Ever since then, she's had chronic pain. To manage it, she's had a prescription for a drug that's widely feared and often misunderstood: morphine.

"I've never been 'high' from morphine," she says, nor has she ever been tempted to take more than the prescribed amount. But she says she's wary of becoming addicted.

She's not the only one with that fear. "Addiction" is a widely used word. But many people don't use it accurately.

What Addiction Is ... and Isn't

Addiction is far more than a craving. It also means there are troubling consequences that can often disrupt someone's personal life or job.?

"Addiction means the individual has lost control over the use of the drug. They're using it compulsively, there are consequences to using the drug, and they continue to use it anyway," says Gary Reisfield, MD. He's a chronic pain and addiction specialist at the University of Florida.

Tolerance and dependence are not the same as addiction.

Tolerance is common in people using opioids (such as hydrocodone, oxycodone, and morphine) for chronic pain. It means the body has become used to the drug, and it has less effect at a given dose, Reisfield says.

Dependence means that there are unpleasant withdrawal symptoms if a person abruptly stops taking a drug.

People who aren't addicted can develop drug tolerance or dependence. And both can be absent in people who are addicted to certain drugs.

Potential for Addiction

Opioid pain medications are some of the most commonly abused prescription drugs. However, the risk that well-screened people will become addicted to opioid drugs when they're taking them for chronic pain is actually low, Reisfield says.

A 2008 study that compiled previous research found that about 3% of people with chronic non-cancer pain using opioid drugs abused them or became addicted. The risk was less than 1% in people who had never abused drugs or been addicted.

Other common drugs with the potential for addiction are benzodiazepines, especially when they're prescribed along with opioids, Reisfield tells WebMD. Some benzodiazepines include Ativan, Klonopin, Valium, and Xanax.?

Nora Ephron: A Big-Screen Love Letter

We fondly remember the cinematic legacy of the director/screenwriter who died Tuesday at the age of 71.
By Amy Wilkinson

Nora Ephron
Photo:

It couldn't have been more than six months ago that a male friend and I were engaged in an uncharacteristically earnest Gchat conversation about the genius of "When Harry Met Sally..." And as philosophical discussions of that sort often go, we couldn't help but wonder why they don't make romantic comedies like they used to. (Oh, the loathsome they: such a handy scapegoat!)

Of course, each generation is wont to think theirs did it best, but it was probably a curious conversation for us to be having considering we hadn't even finished the second grade when the film debuted in 1989. But our belated affinity for the film speaks volumes to the timelessness of a screenplay written by filmmaker Nora Ephron, who died Tuesday at the age of 71.

Ephron wasn't the first to ponder the oft-fraught friendships that develop between men and women, but her commentary on the subject remains among the most true. More than 20 years after Harry (Billy Crystal) and Sally (Meg Ryan) met and road-tripped from Chicago to New York City, the question of whether the "sex part" always gets in the way continues to be a favorite cinematic trope (see: "Friends With Benefits," "No Strings Attached"). But those efforts seem superfluous in the shadow of Ephron's Oscar-nominated achievement.

The New York-born writer was a journalist by trade, who made her foray into feature films with 1983's "Silkwood," which starred Meryl Streep, Kurt Russell and Cher. Ephron (along with co-screenwriter Alice Arlen) received her first of three Oscar noms for the biopic's script based on the life of Karen Silkwood, who died under suspicious circumstances while investigating the processing plant where she worked. Ephron penned a handful of dramatic screenplays (including a a few politically charged scripts that never saw the light of day), but it is her earnest romantic comedies that Ephron will always be remembered for.To wit, today's mostly treacly romantic romps make Ephron's films seem a revelation— and, thankfully, never once a rescue mission. Her female characters were never sad-sack spinsters whose only aim was to find a man. In fact, oftentimes, such as in "Sleepless in Seattle" and "You've Got Mail," the female protagonist was already in a relationship when a new one began to blossom with the real Mr. Right.

But if an Ephron heroine were ever to be considered in need of salvation, so too were her heroes: both equally formidable and equally flawed. In "Sleepless in Seattle," Meg Ryan's Annie, stuck in a lackluster relationship with Bill Pullman's Walter, was as much rescued by Tom Hanks' widowed Sam as she rescued him, bringing him back to life atop the twinkling Empire State Building.

Much of what made Ephron's characters so indelible was what came out of their mouths. The screenwriter excelled at witty, quippy dialogue that often beat with the quickened pulse of New York City (a frequent setting for her films). I mean, "I'll have what she's having"? Come on! And don't even get me started on Harry's proclamation of love to Sally. To this day, I can't even read the monologue without getting a little misty-eyed: "... And I love that you are the last person I want to talk to before I go to sleep at night. And it's not because I'm lonely, and it's not because it's New Year's Eve. I came here tonight because when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible." (Do yourself a favor and read her entire quotes page on Goodreads.)

Of course, Ephron wasn't just a scribe but a keen director, who got the best out of her actors and understood the power of a Meg Ryan-Tom Hanks one-two punch. And in the end, she had no delusions about what her career was and wasn't, telling MTV News in a 2009 interview while promoting her final film, "Julie & Julia," that she never felt penned in by the romantic-comedy genre.

"I'm not complaining about any box that I'm in, because I can write whatever I want," Ephron said. "Fortunately, I'm not just in the movie business, so I don't feel that the only way I can express myself is by the movies I make."

Fortunately for us, she was in the movie business, and she never once faked it.

Share your condolences for Ephron's family and friends in the comments.

Courting the cookie vote: Obama vs. Romney in the presidential bake-off

Forget Democrat vs. Republican. How about Chocolate Chip vs. Oatmeal Raisin? Political preferences are but one way to choose a White House occupant.

By Mike Eckel,?Contributor / June 26, 2012

Ann Romney, the wife of US Republican Presidential candidate Mitt Romney, stands next to owner Linda Hundt, as she holds up a cookie in the shape of Michigan (minus the Upper Peninsula) inside the Sweetie-licious Bakery Cafe in DeWitt, Michigan, last week.

Never mind taxes, wars, immigration, same-sex marriage, or global warming ? here?s a question that is always at stake in any presidential election year: Chocolate Chip or Oatmeal Raisin??

Or this year?s iteration: Mama Kaye?s White and Dark Chocolate Chip or M&M?

It?s not quite the Kitchen Debates, but for the past 20 years, Family Circle magazine's Presidential Cookie Bake-off has been a wildly popular sideshow to the presidential election campaign: Which candidate?s spouse makes a better cookie?

The magazine has sponsored five previous contests in every presidential election year since 1992 when Hillary Clinton and Barbara Bush crossed cookie sheets and went mano-a-mano over Chocolate Chip Oatmeal (Clinton) vs. Chocolate Chip (Bush).?

It works like this: The candidates? spouses offer up favorite cookie recipes for public consumption. Readers then whip up their own batches and vote on which cookie is tastiest.

This year, bakers can cast their votes for M&M cookies, courtesy of Ann Romney, or Mama Kaye?s White and Dark Chocolate Chip, from Michelle Obama, through Family Circle?s Facebook page.

It isn?t quite like fortune cookies, but the magazine sponsors insist that the winning recipes are surprisingly accurate in their outcomes, predicting the eventual occupants of the White House in every contest with the exception of one: Cindy McCain?s Oatmeal Butterscotch beat out Michelle Obama?s Shortbread in the 2008 culinary vote, though the popular vote of course ultimately favored Barack over John.

(Bill Clinton, it should be noted, also got into the game that year (Oatmeal) as Hillary Clinton challenged Mr. Obama in the Democratic primary race.)

And spare us your snarky political assumptions: Democrats don?t only use vegan, gluten-free, hemp-and-flax, free-range, organic, non-GMO ingredients and Republicans don?t only use butter, sugar, chocolate, and red-white-and-blue sprinkles.

There have, by the way, been some unusual cookie components in the past, notably: pumpkin puree (for Theresa Heinz Kerry?s Pumpkin Spice), and white vinegar (Tipper Gore?s Gingersnaps).?

In Caddis Wood: Fiction by Mary Fran?ois Rockcastle ? Num?ro Cinq

It is my great pleasure to introduce Mary Fran?ois Rockcastle and her fiction to the pages of Num?ro Cinq. I met Mary in an airport shuttle, both of us homebound to Minneapolis after the AWP conference in Chicago. Whereas I was completely exhausted and could have passed among the living dead, Mary seemed energetic, friendly and grounded. Chatting with her in Midway terminal was a perfect anodyne for post-AWP fatigue. Later, when I met with Mary in St. Paul to discuss her most recent novel, In Caddis Wood, I wasn?t surprised to learn that she has extended this same amount of energy throughout the renaissance of the Twin Cities? burgeoning literary community. Indeed, Mary is a pioneer and champion of Minnesota literature: Mary and her colleagues launched Minnesota?s first MFA in Creative Writing program at Hamline University; she founded Hamline?s literary journal, Water Stone Review and remains its executive editor. Mary is the founding dean of Hamline?s Graduate Liberal Studies program as well as its Director of Creative Writing Programs.

But this list of career accomplishments (which is not all-inclusive) is to say nothing of the fact that Mary also writes books. Earlier in her writing career, Mary created a writing refuge in Minneapolis?s Loft Literary Center to make time to write after hours. Her ensuing dedication resulted in two novels?Rainy Lake and In Caddis Wood?both published by Graywolf Press and both nominated for a Minnesota Book Award in 1995 and 2012 respectively. The longer gestation period novels is not surprising. In Caddis Wood is a product of tireless research?a thoughtful study in botany, architecture, medicine and poetry. In Caddis Wood ultimately pays tribute to the midwestern landscapes of urban Minneapolis and the woods of Wisconsin??a place that becomes a fully-formed character in its own complexity and reveals a fragile symbiosis between humans and nature in the novel?s thematic undercurrent. The narrative oscillates between the two distinct points of view and voices of Hallie and Carl, whose storytelling reflects on their long marriage, weaving seamlessly between memory and the present day as they encounter Carl?s quickly-degrading health. In Caddis Wood has received praises from Publisher?s Weekly and the Star Tribune, which hailed Mary Rockcastle?s ?remarkable accomplishment to find in [these] everyday occurrences a story of great moment.?

In chapter twelve excerpted below, Carl suffers from advanced stages of Shy Drager Syndrome, finding himself in a semi-lucid state that blurs memory with present day, the living with the dead. The chapter is a convergence of characters: Cory and Bea are Carl and Hallie?s daughters, Joe and Marnie are their neighbors. Among the dead are Tim, Cory?s former partner, and Alice, the former proprietress of Carl and Hallie?s cabin home.

?

HE CAN hardly speak now, only manages to scribble a few words.? Hallie is good at interpreting his broken sentences and sprawled lines.? He is a book, its pages laid out in front of her, written in a language only she can understand.? She resists the gradual wasting away of his body, insisting on his daily exercises, pouring lotion on his peeling skin, feeding him as if he is a growing child and not a dying man.

Each morning she rolls the hospital bed onto the porch and as close to the window as possible, raising it so he?s in a sitting position and can see out.? She cracks the window open a few inches.? The drama in his head is as vivid as anything he sees on the television or DVD player.? Sounds enter the constantly evolving film in his imagination: part real, part memory, part what happens when the different tracks collide and merge.? He doesn?t know how much is caused by the illness, the cells in his brain ossifying like the rest of his body.? After years of intense industry, his mind and body filling and using each moment, he has become friends with slowness.? He is acutely aware of his surroundings, of each tiny change in his body and in the world he can see and hear.

He hears the pop, pop, bang of frozen trees.? Swelling fibres of wood bursting and cracking.? The rustle of cattails beside the stream, the ruffed grouse striking the white pine?s brittle branches, Hallie making coffee in the kitchen.? He can hear his mother and father talking softly, thinking he?s asleep?one of their happier moments, making plans for Sunday at the beach.? He?s in and out of the arcing waves, waits eagerly for the white froth to rise over his shoulder before he dives forward, bodysurfing the wave in to shore.? Gritty sand against his stomach.

Soft clacking and crunching beneath the pines, snapping brush, skitters across frozen snow.? Loud echo of a snapping branch, which clatters to the ground.? Bittersweet berries flash scarlet on the bank and Bea in her red hat and Cory in her blue are rolling a head for the snowman.? Tim?s curly hair is uncovered.? They wind Lucas? woolen scarf around the snowman?s neck, put one of Carl?s fishing hats on the head.? Cory throws a snowball and they tumble over each other in the snow.

Sometimes he hears Alice?s voice, which is impossible since she was dead by the time they bought the summer cabin.? But he knows it?s her.? She and Hallie were right about the garden.? All his grand schemes?flowers and shrubs and soil carted in, fertilizer, herbicide, pesticide, fences, screens.? Nature laughing at him.? Now, when spring comes, the meadow will bloom with native prairie grasses and wildflowers.? Shrubbery planted along the edge of the house and meadow will provide food and cover for grouse, birds, the red fox family, woodchucks, and other animals.? Hallie, with Joe?s help, has kept up the vegetable garden, though he suspects she?ll let it go once he?s gone.

He hears other voices, too.? They began as a whisper, more than the sounds and music nature made.? He listened hard, thought his mind was playing tricks or that the disease had entered his brain and was causing auditory synapses to misfire.? The whisper grew and multiplied, became a chorus, until one day the sounds held meaning for him.? Anima antiqua, Alice wrote in her notebook, the spirit that?s lived in a place for a long time.? He hears it beneath the snow, the frozen ground.? He hears it in the creaking branches, inside the whispering stream.

we are out we are inside the house ? ? we were here before ? ? we have our own lives hidden in the dark ? ? we nest inside the walls, beneath the floor ? ? we shudder and pop ? ? tap tap tap ? ? we?re hungry ? ? we sleep ? ? we dig our roots deep we die ? ? we return we listen we love in our own way ? ? we remember ? ? we are born in the dark we reach up toward the light

His mind is a camera, memories sharp as photographs.? The house on that first visit: dull brown linoleum, dusty books, gray husks on sills.? In the closet hung Henry?s parkas, flannel shirts, Alice?s hand-knit sweaters.? Beneath them boots, bathinette, Swedish linens.? Photographs: Alice?s mother against the Baltic Sea, Alice at age twelve?white middy blouse and knickers.? Henry in his waders, Will in his Marine?s uniform.? Hallie peers through the cloudy kitchen window.? When she removes her hat, her hair tumbles like a rain of sugar maple leaves.? He blinks and they are inside the tent and she is tweezing ticks off his body.? In the light of the kerosene lantern against the walls of the tent, she takes off her blouse.? He gazes at her graceful neck, the swing of her hair, her perfect breasts.

Hallie steps up behind him and wraps her arms around him, careful not to hurt him.? For a moment he?s unsure where he is, whether they are here on this porch on a winter morning or there, inside the tent, the house silent in the dark.? The birdfeeder spins and he remembers.

When he was a young man, he thought the body was everything.? He looked at women, even after he was married, and lusted after their bodies.? At night he?d wake and roll toward Hallie and just the feel of her skin or the smell of her hair made him harden with desire.? He?d press against her, helpless to stop it, even though he knew she was sleeping and didn?t want it.? Sometimes his drive was so great he woke her and she turned to him and let him come inside.? Years later he felt the coldness in her back, her anger and his hurt and the loneliness in each of them.? Then she fell in love with someone else, though he didn?t know it, only that he needed to go after her, make her believe in him again.

Now, when he can no longer string sounds into words, when his body is useless, when all sexual desire and function are gone, he reads her love for him in her eyes, feels it in the touch of her hands, the sound of her voice as she reads to him.? He is surprised at how busy she keeps herself, how cheerful she is most days?humming or singing as she cooks or does housework, silent only when she reads or writes or works at the computer.? Was she always this busy and happy in her daily life?? Did the darkness descend only when he was present?? She does not hover or interrupt his reverie.? After years of simple meals, when she was teaching full time and writing, she enjoys cooking again.? He loves the smells, warmth emanating from the kitchen.? She wraps up what?s left over and takes it to Joe and Marnie?s, freezes it for Cordelia, who visits regularly, gives it to Father O?Neil, the priest from St. Luke?s Church in Spooner who comes once a week to give him Communion.

He hears a cupboard in the kitchen opening and closing, a pot against the stove.? Soon the room fills with the smell of onions, beef, and vegetables.? When the girls were little, he moved their high chairs side by side, pinned bibs around their necks as he fed them creamed carrots from a jar.? Their orange faces stare back at him from the window pane.? Cordelia chortles and spits carrots back at him.? Bea blows hers into bubbles that dribble onto the tray.? They laugh as he swipes at their faces with the washcloth.

Hallie pulls up a chair and a small table where she sets a steaming bowl of soup, plate of bread, and two cotton towels.? One she lays across his upper chest and the other she hangs over her shoulder.? She blows on the surface of the soup.? He sees the tiny puckers in her lower lip, the downy hair on her skin.? When she spills, she lifts the towel from her shoulder and deftly wipes his mouth and chin.

After, she puts on a stack of CDs and bundles up to go out.? Each day she walks to the county road, five miles there and back.? Unless it?s below zero, and then she goes only as far as the red gate.? ?Need anything?? she calls.? Seeing by his face that he?s all right, she waves and shuts the door.? He hears the crunch of her boots on the path.? A wing flickers to his left and a rare chickadee lands on the feeder.? tap tap tap ? ? cheer-up cheerily cheer-up cheerily, what-cheer cheer what-cheer cheer

The house shifts and groans.? Beneath the floor the pine snake sleeps in an S-shaped coil.? Eggs lie dormant in the sill between panes of glass.? A red squirrel plucks a berry from the hedge and emits a chipping plaint.? In her closet Alice?s hand-knit sweater slips off a hanger and falls noiselessly to the floor.

A woman appears in the yard, dressed in a brown overcoat.? She glides lightly across the snow and disappears into the trees that line the slope above the swamp garden.? He watches in his mind?s eye as she wends her way along the path.? she knows our voice ? ? many voices not one ? ? she listens? ? come home Henry come home ? ? she hears the rustling wind ? ? burbling bubbling rising and falling song ? ? trills chirps whistles metallic chips of birds ? ? she slides the pouch with Henry?s ashes inside the wall ? ? some of us die before our time ? ? we do not choose ? ? we feel what is lost but it is not grief ? ? we are in we are out of time

The phone rings and clicks and Cordelia?s voice pierces the quiet.? ?Hi, Dad.? I e-mailed you the latest models.? The committee liked your triangulated grid and the wrapped walkways.? They were especially excited about the idea of drawing water up through the piles and distributing it through the landscape trays.? Tell me what you think of the models.? I?ll be out by dinnertime on Friday.? Love you, Dad.?

Cordelia is walking toward the house, something held in her cupped hands:? eggshells crushed by the bird?s weight.? Yellowed leaves falling in the spring, acid in the stream, fish filled with toxins.? He blinks and she is gone.? A movement of white and then another and within minutes the air is filled with snowflakes that blanket the brown grass and melt into the metal-covered stream.? He tries to focus on one flake at a time but they are falling too fast and blur into a confetti of white.? At his grandfather?s window, he knelt as the snow fell on frozen fields. ? On Christmas Eve, at their home in Minneapolis, he stood on the back deck, meticulously scarring the new-fallen snow.? The next morning Beatrice and Cordelia knelt at the dining room window peering out at the perfect line of reindeer tracks.? What do you mean there?s no Santa.? How the heck did those reindeer tracks get there?? Tell me that.? Years later Cordelia found the hand-made metal instrument in the garage, the long extender bar, forked ends mimicking the tracks of deer.

He had to wait until the ground had thawed enough to bury his mother.? The local cemetery let him keep her in their vault, which was generous since neither she nor his grandfather was buried in that cemetery.? The orchard was sacred ground for both of them.? Carl dropped two red roses into the newly dug grave, the only black in a blanket of white.

The snow continues to fall and he hopes that Hallie will turn around and come back.? Just the kind of weather they would have snowshoed or hiked in once.? In Oslo, he and Sverre Bergstr?m strolled at midnight through the snow, brainstorming ideas for the town hall.? In the white he sees a figure.? As the form moves closer, he recognizes his father?s telltale walk.? He wills his hand to move, but the limb lies useless on the sheet.? Where have you been?? Tommy is dressed in the same brown corduroy slacks, navy blue sweater, blue Oxford cloth shirt.? His hair and shoulders are flecked with snow.

Tommy stops a few feet from the window and they gaze at one another.? Carl has so much he wants to tell him.? I hear things: human voices, living and dead, sounds of the non-human world.? I hear the creak and groan of the earth, sighs and whistling breaths of hibernating creatures, rasp of roots and silt sifting in the stream.? I hear Cordelia and Beatrice at play.? I hear my mother, your wife, weeping in the bedroom.? I hear music and don?t know who is playing?Beatrice or her.? I hear Frank Rossi calling me from the street, the click of our sticks against the ball, the El rumbling past my window.

When Hallie wakes him, he blinks at the darkened meadow, the untouched surface of the snow.? She lights the lamps and washes his face and hands.? She moves into the kitchen where he hears her preparations for dinner.? Once the casserole is in the oven, she pulls her reading chair close to him, picks up Rilke?s Book of the Hours, and reads:

Summer was like your house: you knew
where each thing stood.
Now you must go out into your heart
as onto a vast plain. Now
the immense loneliness begins.

The days go numb, the wind
sucks the world from your senses like withered leaves.?

He sees the shadowy trees, tips of wind-burned reeds.? Hallie?s voice rises and falls like the tumbling stream.

Through the empty branches the sky remains.
It is what you have.
Be earth now, and evensong.
Be the ground lying under that sky.
Be modest now, like a thing
ripened until it is real,
so that he who began it all
can feel you when he reaches for you.?

He wants to tell her what it is like to be alive like this.? She hides her sadness but he sees the imprint on her face when she returns from her walks. ?They await Bea?s next phone call, Cory?s visits, the next chapter of the book she?s reading to him, the way the woods change with each passing day.? She feeds him, washes him, catheterizes him every few hours. ?It is just the two of them?her voice rising and falling, her hands tending him, her heat beside him.
