Singular questions about what it means to be human in the face of emerging technologies will be explored March 1-3 when Arizona State University hosts Emerge.
An unparalleled campus-wide collaboration, Emerge unites artists, engineers, bio scientists, social scientists, story tellers and designers to build, draw, write and rethink the future of the human species and the environments that we share.
Leaders from industry and prominent authors and futurists will join ASU faculty and selected students for an intense exploration of emerging technology and the implications of those breakthroughs for people and environments.
"This is a time for humanists, artists and designers to leave their ivory tower and seek to integrate their knowledge in interdisciplinary teams that design the future,'' said Professor Thanassis Rikakis, director of the ASU School of Arts, Media and Engineering in the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts and one of the principal organizers of the event.
The three-day conference has attracted such internationally prominent change makers and futurists as author Bruce Sterling (Beyond the Beyond), Sherry Turkle (Alone Together: Why We Expect More from Technology and Less from Each Other), Bruce Mau (Incomplete Manifesto for Growth, Massive Change Network), Neal Stephenson (Snow Crash, The Diamond Age, Reamde) and Stewart Brand (The Whole Earth Discipline).
"I'm amazed at the nerve we seem to have hit with Emerge. We have people flying in from all over the world and the country on their own nickel just to be part of it,'' said Joel Garreau, a key conference organizer and Lincoln Professor of Law, Culture and Values at the Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law. "We have a Nobel Prize winner who's happy to be a participant in a workshop not even its leader. And there he'll be right next to extraordinarily talented students, faculty, and people from the community," Garreau said.
Emerge is built around eight areas where ASU research is breaking new ground from disease destroyers to human enhancement. These Futures@ASU presentations will lead into interdisciplinary workshops where one of the most exciting results of the conference is expected to happen.
Much of the excitement generated is the anticipation of the intense, highly interactive workshop format that allows artists and scientists such freedom to collaborate, experiment and explore future possibilities together.
"A storyteller is as insightful to a sustainability team as a climatologist. The biodesign lab is as creative as the sculpture studio, a musician is as important to an educational technology team as a programmer, and an engineer is as crucial to an immersive theater play as the director," explained Rikakis.
Cynthia Selin, assistant professor in the ASU School of Sustainability and the Center for Nanotechnology in Society and one of the conference's three principal organizers, agreed. "Emerge is a chance to rehearse, play with, articulate, and build out alternative futures," she said. "It will spark new ideas for how to thrive amidst uncertainty and the escalating complexities of modern times. We are not searching for utopias but a measure of moxie in charting sustainable pathways," Selin said.
Leaders in the "Design Fiction'' movement including Sterling, Julian Bleecker, co-founder of Near Future Laboratory, and Stuart Candy, a senior foresight and innovation specialist at Arup, a global design firm, are among the workshop leaders. The products of these workshops provocative and evocative stories, games, performances and objects from which a vision of the future develops will be shared with the public beginning at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, March 3, when ASU President Michael Crow will be joined in Neeb Hall by authors Sterling, Stephenson, Mau, Turkle and Brand in a series keynote talks and panel discussions inspired by the workshop explorations.
Throughout the three-day conference, the Digital Culture Festival celebrates the collaboration of artists, engineers and scientists with a series of installations and interactive happenings on public display. Among the exhibits will be a lighted sculptural passageway of Plexiglas "blossoms'' that pulse with sound and light in reaction to movement passing underneath; educational mixed-reality games and a miniature golf game that responds to player's successes and failures. These creations fill indoor and outdoor spaces spanning the design and arts buildings at the west end of the Tempe campus.
Emerge culminates in a Saturday evening interactive media show at the Nelson Fine Arts Plaza on the Tempe campus. Here, buildings surrounding the plaza become the canvas for a movement, image and sound show that engages and immerses the audience in the futuristic themes explored throughout the three-day conference.
The audience will interact with mediated sculptures and installations. Actors will move throughout the audience encouraging the interaction. The audience will drive real-time graphics and sound engines to produce three-dimensional visual displays on the building and surround sound displays in the plaza. The cutting-edge show is being developed by a diverse group of faculty and students from the arts, design and engineering units at ASU.

OAK BROOK, Ill. Computed tomography (CT) colonography can be used as a primary screening tool for colorectal cancer in adults over the age of 65, according to a new study published online in the journal Radiology.
Some previous medical studies have found no significant difference in the diagnostic accuracy of CT colonography, also known as "virtual colonoscopy," and traditional optical colonoscopy. This study looks at whether both exams are as effective for adults over 65 as they are for adults between 50 and 65 years of age.
In the study, C. Daniel Johnson, M.D., professor and chair of radiology at Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, Ariz., and a team of researchers conducted a follow-up analysis of data from the National CT Colonography Trial, in which 2,600 patients over the age of 50 underwent both virtual and optical colonoscopies at 15 centers around the country.
Dr. Johnson's team analyzed trial data from 477 patients over the age of 65 and 2,054 patients between the ages of 50 and 65 who were screened with the two procedures for clinically significant pre-cancerous growths called polyps. Patients in the study were comprised of both men and women at predominantly an average risk for colorectal cancer.
Cancerous lesions 1 centimeter or larger were found in 6.9 percent of patients in the 65 and older group and in 3.7 percent of the younger patients.
There was no significant difference in the accuracy of CT colonography for the detection of large and intermediate-sized cancers in the older participants compared to the younger participants. Sensitivity and specificity among the older and younger groups were 0.82 and 0.83 and 0.92 and 0.86, respectively.
"We found no statistical difference in the diagnostic performance between the two patient groups," Dr. Johnson said. "This is good information for patients of any age, as they can consider CT colonography as a valid option for colorectal cancer screening."
Colorectal cancer is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer in both men and women and the third leading cause of cancer deaths in the U.S. According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), a decline in colorectal cancer incidence rates over the last two decades is largely attributable to screening tests that allow polyps to be removed before they progress to cancer.
"I don't believe there is any screening test that can intervene as early in the biology of the tumor as colorectal cancer screening," Dr. Johnson said. "We have the opportunity to detect pre-malignant polyps, remove them and prevent an entire class of cancers."
Despite the effectiveness of colorectal cancer screening, the ACS estimates that only half of the U.S. population over the age 50 is being screened as recommended for the disease. Experts point to cost and a lack of access to health care as contributing factors.
Although both optical and virtual colonoscopy procedures typically require the use of laxatives to empty the colon prior to the test, there are major differences between the two exams.
In the traditional colonoscopy, an optical instrument called a colonoscope allows a physician to visually examine the colon and to remove polyps by passing a wire loop through the scope. In this procedure, the risk of perforating the bowel is higher and sedation is required.
"For the older patient, the risks of and recovery from sedation are issues," Dr. Johnson said.
Introduced in the 1990s, CT colonography produces cross-sectional, three-dimensional images of the entire colon and rectum. While the CTC exam itself is quicker to perform and about half the cost of the optical colonoscopy, it involves exposure to low doses of radiation and it must be repeated more often. When polyps 6 millimeters or larger are detected by CT colonography, the patient must undergo an optical colonoscopy to have them removed. In addition, incidental CT findings outside the colon might require additional follow-up.
"There isn't a fight between CT colonography and colonoscopy, but there is a fight in medicine against colon cancer," Dr. Johnson said. "We want patients to be screened. CT colonography is a preferred test for some patients and should be an option. Patients should talk to their doctor and choose the best option for them."

HELENA, Montana (AP) ? Attorneys who accuse author Greg Mortenson of defrauding readers in his best-selling "Three Cups of Tea" say his case is no different from that of James Frey, who admitted on the "Oprah Winfrey Show" that he lied in his memoir "A Million Little Pieces."
That lawsuit ended in a settlement that offered refunds to buyers of the book.
Mortenson has asked a judge to throw out the civil lawsuit that says he fabricated portions of his book, saying that if it is allowed to proceed, other authors could be subjected to similar claims and the result would be a stifling of the free exchange of ideas. The suit claims Mortenson lied about how he began building schools in Pakistan and Afghanistan and fabricated other events in the books "Three Cups of Tea" and "Stones Into Schools."
"Plaintiffs should not be allowed to create a world where authors are exposed to the debilitating expense of class action litigation just because someone believes a book contains inaccuracies," attorney John Kauffman wrote in the filing late last month.
But the plaintiffs' attorneys argue in court documents filed Tuesday the lawsuit should go forward because of the precedent set by class-action lawsuit against Frey. The two cases are "nearly identical," they said.
"The facts in the (Frey) case are stunningly close to the facts in this case, but not nearly as compelling," wrote attorney Alexander Blewett.
The attorney who led the Frey lawsuit, Larry Drury, is also a plaintiffs' attorney in the nine-month-old case against Mortenson.
Winfrey chose "A Million Little Pieces," for her book club in September 2005, boosting its sales, which eventually topped 3.5 million. But then Frey acknowledged on Winfrey's show in January 2006 that he had lied in the memoir of addiction and recovery.
A judge in 2007 certified a class-action lawsuit by disgruntled readers against Frey, and the resulting settlement offered a refund to anybody who bought the book before the falsehoods were acknowledged.
Only 1,729 people asked to be reimbursed, costing Random House $27,348. The attorneys in the case were paid $783,000 in fees.
Haddon has not yet scheduled a hearing on whether to dismiss the claim against Mortenson.
The lawsuit accuses the Montana resident of being involved in a racketeering scheme to turn him into a false hero, defraud millions of people out of the price of the books and raise millions in donations to the charity. The other defendants allegedly in on the scheme are co-author David Relin, publisher Penguin Group and Mortenson's Bozeman-based charity, Central Asia Institute.
Mortenson's accusers seek reimbursement of all the money that was made from his books. The lawsuit has been amended four times, with a changing cast of plaintiffs who now number four.
The lawsuit was filed a few weeks after author Jon Krakauer and "60 Minutes" revealed in April 2011 discrepancies in "Three Cups of Tea" and questioned whether Mortenson was benefiting from his charity.
Meanwhile, Montana state prosecutors are moving ahead with their own investigation into Mortenson's charity, saying they plan to update the public about the investigation in the next few weeks.
The Montana attorney general's office is investigating whether the Central Asia Institute broke any laws that govern non-profits in Montana.
Assistant Attorney General Jim Molloy said investigators have reviewed thousands of pages of documents and interviewed Mortenson and others connected to the charity.
He declined to say what the investigation has revealed but said his office would be updating the public within a month.
The state's probe does not involve the merits of the accounts contained in Mortenson's books, he said.
Mortenson has denied wrongdoing and has kept out of the public eye since having heart surgery last year. In December, the Central Asia Institute said in its year-end letter that Mortenson would no longer be involved in the charity's day-to-day management and that it was looking at expanding its three-person board of directors.

RADISIN broadcasts 24 hours a day via the Internet, satellite and cable TV. It says 100,000 listeners tune in daily, including an undisclosed number from Iran, where Internet speeds are slow and many sites, including those of political opposition groups, are blocked.
It's not the only Israeli media directed toward Iran. Israel's state-run radio station has been broadcasting in Farsi for 50 years from a spartan studio off a narrow Jerusalem alleyway.
It too chats with Iranians ? via a switchboard in Germany to get around a ban on calls from Iran to the Jewish state. Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has even named the "Zionist broadcast" as among those behind civilian unrest in his country.
