FIRST PERSON | As Irene approached the Washington, D.C., area on Saturday, I heard a lot of conflicting messages about what to expect. Trying to sort out what to believe was one of the more difficult puzzles I've played, and there wasn't even a cheat sheet with the right answers on it. In the end, I pieced together the expectation that the rain would start sometime after noon, the actual hurricane would hit in the late evening or overnight, and we could expect power outages and road blockages due to downed trees and power lines. There was a small risk of flooding due to excessive rain, but that didn't sound too likely for my local area. The main message was to stay off the roads from noon until the hurricane was definitely over.

For food, we thought it wise to have something available that didn't require cooking, as our stove is unfortunately electric (as is the microwave, naturally). We came up with the idea of ordering Chinese takeout and putting it in the fridge. If we had power, we could reheat in the microwave, but if we did not, then we could simply eat it cold. Naturally, we also stocked up on things like bananas and nut mixes, which we could eat raw between meals.

As for water, we're on our own personal well. Our well is electric, and, like many modern electric wells, it isn't actually set up to dump a bucket into. It is theoretically possible to open the well anyway, but the cap is inhumanly heavy - designed to discourage you from doing something like that. So, in order to avoid having to figure out what to do about water in the case of an extended power outage, we filled up every bucket we could find. We already had a large supply of Deer Park drinking water, so that wasn't an issue.

We also heard the advice to batten down all the loose stuff in the yard. I took the opportunity to throw out some old folding lawn chairs that weren't really worth keeping, and I put the ones that were worth keeping in the garage. Of course, throwing stuff out means throwing it in the back of the truck, so that required a trip to the dump. In order to make sure the trip was worthwhile, we scoured the house inside and out to find all possible trash, recycling, cardboard, and even electronic recycling.

Finally, in the name of safety, I made the ultimate personal sacrifice: I chose to cancel my 5 p.m. massage appointment. I have to say that particular preparation was the biggest pain in my backside of them all - literally, of course.

Oh, yes. I also looked up what television shows we might want to see for the next few days, so that I could set my DVR to record them in case we lost our electricity. Luckily, I have a spouse who is smarter than me and was able to point out the flaw in that logic, so I didn't actually waste my time setting recordings.

We woke up early Saturday morning. We made the trip to the dump, walked outside with the dogs for a last "dry" pee (for them, not us - we use indoor plumbing, but they don't), bathed, and then filled the tub with water. After that, there was nothing to do but wait.

The rain actually started around 10:30 a.m., though it was just barely a drizzle. Still, it was enough water that we knew the hurricane had officially begun - early.

After one more pee trip, we counted our animals, came up with the right number, and locked them all inside. From that moment on, we were just waiting the storm out.

I suggested that maybe we should enjoy the electricity while we still had it. We popped in a DVD from Netflix.

Hurricane Irene hit most of the East Coast with varying degrees of fury. In my area, she was pretty mild. The rain increased and eventually became a torrid downpour that lasted for hours. However, as predicted, our local area did not have any flooding crises. We also never experienced any severe winds. The electricity stayed on; there was one blink of an outage, lasting less than two seconds (not even long enough for us to reach for our flashlights), but otherwise, we had no electrical issues at all.

In the end, we wound up watching four movies, one right after the other. We stayed up until sometime after 4 a.m., expecting something big and bad to happen that never really came.

The next morning was just glorious. The air smelled fresh, the sky was a brilliant blue, and the birds serenaded us more joyfully and more vigorously than usual.

We suffered no property damage whatsoever; our only trouble was a lot of fallen leaves and a few twigs and branches.

All in all, we had a very good hurricane. Our entire family of all species stayed calm and safe throughout the event. The movies were great fun. Although Irene was not so kind to everyone in her path, she seemed to have smiled on us. I am grateful for the entire experience, but especially for coming through it completely intact.

Turkey to return confiscated property (AP)

ANKARA, Turkey ? Turkey's government is returning hundreds of properties confiscated from the country's Christian and Jewish minorities over the past 75 years in a gesture to religious groups who complain of discrimination that is also likely to thwart possible court rulings against the country.

A government decree published Saturday returns assets that once belonged to Greek, Armenian or Jewish trusts and makes provisions for the government to pay compensation for any confiscated property that has since been sold on.

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan was scheduled to announce the decision formally later Sunday when he hosts religious leaders and the heads of about 160 minority trusts, at a fast-breaking dinner for the holy Muslim month of Ramadan, officials said.

The properties include former hospital, orphanage or school buildings and cemeteries. Their return is a key European Union demand and a series of court cases has also been filed against primarily Muslim Turkey at the European Court of Human Rights. Last year, the court ordered Turkey to return an orphanage to the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate.

Some properties were seized when they fell into disuse over the years. Others were confiscated after 1974 when Turkey ruled that non-Muslim trusts could not own new property in addition to those that were already registered in their names in 1936. The 1974 decision came around the time of a Turkish invasion of Cyprus that followed a coup attempt by supporters of union with Greece and relations with that country were at an all time low.

Erdogan's Islamic-rooted government seeking to promote religious freedoms has pledged to address the problems of the religious minorities. In the past few years, it amended laws to allow for the return of some of the properties, but restrictions remained and the issue on how to resolve properties that were sold on to third parties was left unsolved.

The decree overcomes those restrictions and helps scupper further court rulings.

"There was huge pressure from the European Court of Human Rights which has already ruled against Turkey," said Orhan Kemal Cengiz a human rights activist and lawyer who specializes in minority issues.

"It is nevertheless a very important development," he said. "With the return of properties and the compensations, the minority communities will be able to strengthen economically and their lives will be made easier."

The country's population of 74 million, mostly Muslim, includes an estimated 65,000 Armenian Orthodox Christians, 23,000 Jews and fewer than 2,500 Greek Orthodox Christians.

Religious minorities have often complained of discrimination in Turkey, which had a history of conflict with Greece and with Armenians who accuse Turkish authorities of trying to exterminate them early in the last century. Turkey says the mass killings at that time were the result of the chaos of war, rather than a systematic campaign of genocide. Few minority members have been able to hold top positions in politics, the military or the public service.

Turkey is also under intense pressure to reopen a seminary that trained generations of Greek Orthodox patriarchs. The Halki Theological School on Heybeliada Island, near Istanbul, was closed to new students in 1971 under a law that put religious and military training under state control. The school closed its doors in 1985, when the last five students graduated.

Google Steps Up to Defend Android Developers From Patent Troll Lawsuit

Google has intervened in an ongoing intellectual property dispute between smartphone application developers and a patent-holding firm, Wired.com has learned, marking the Mountain View company?s first public move to defend Android coders from a patent troll lawsuit that?s cast a pall on the community.

The company says it filed a request with the United States Patent and Trademark office Friday for reexamination of two patents asserted by East Texas-based patent firm Lodsys. Google?s request calls for the USPTO to assess whether or not the patents? claims are valid.

?We?ve asked the US Patent Office to reexamine two Lodsys patents that we believe should never have been issued,? Google senior vice president and general counsel Kent Walker told Wired.com in a statement. ?Developers play a critical part in the Android ecosystem and Google will continue to support them.?

Lodsys is currently suing 11 smartphone app developers for allegedly infringing the two patents, U.S. 7,222,078 and 7,620,565. Lodsys claims its patents cover the use of in-app payments technology, which allows users to carry out transactions within the context of an app itself. Countless app developers?use in-app payments technology in their applications.

Lodsys CEO Mark Small did not respond to an e-mail, and the company did not immediately respond to a telephone inquiry from Wired.com on Friday evening, after Google filed its request.

If Google?s request for reexamination is granted, it could end up saving the developers and development studios ? many of whom are composed of a handful of staffers ? from large litigation fees.

?Reexaminations are often times a tool used to stay ongoing litigation,? said Julie Samuels, staff attorney for the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a non-profit digital rights advocacy group. ?It?s much, much cheaper than federal litigation, which on average costs between two and five million dollars.?

Since Lodsys first began targeting application developers months ago, the patent saga has been long and messy. The firm originally dispatched a series of cease and desist letters to iOS and Android app developers in May. The letters threatened legal action within a 21 day period if developers did not negotiate to pay Lodsys a licensing fee for the use of the technology. The company is now suing 11 defendants, ranging from small app development studios to major game companies like Atari, Square Enix and Electronic Arts.

Dan Abelow, the former owner of the patents who sold them in 2004, told Wired.com he was unable to comment on the matter.

Lodsys? actions are what many intellectual property experts refer to as ?patent trolling? ? the practice of using patents for little else outside of suing other companies for damages or coaxing them into licensing agreements.

Both Google and Apple have licenses for Lodsys? patents, so Lodsys has been going after third-party developers instead. But the potential impact on Apple and Google is clear enough. Google confirmed they filed this request ?inter partes,? which essentially means Google will be involved in the precedings throughout the entire process.

?Inter partes requests are usually more thorough,? said Samuels. Ninety-five percent of ?inter partes? reexamination requests filed since 1999 have been granted by the USPTO.

Of course, even if the USPTO grants the reexamination request, there?s no guarantee that the court will grant a stay.

?Courts have inconsistent track records of granting stays of litigation,? Samuels said. Especially in the eastern district of Texas ? home to a federal court that is often favorable to patent litigation plaintiffs ? where the lawsuit was filed. Eastern district courts grant motions to stay litigation pending reexamination around 20 percent of the time, according to a 2009 study conducted by Matthew Smith, senior counsel at Foley and Lardner LLP.

That could complicate things for the developer defendants, and potentially continue to cost them money for ongoing litigation expenses.

Still, Google?s request marks an entirely different strategy than Apple?s, and could potentially pay off for all parties involved.

Except, of course, for Lodsys.
