Utah State football: Kerwynn Williams has career night against hometown team UNLV

Utah State Aggies running back Kerwynn Williams (25) suits up prior to the UNLV game in Logan Saturday, Sept. 29, 2012.

Jeffrey D. Allred, Deseret News

LOGAN ? Utah State running back Kerwynn Williams said it didn't matter to him that the opponent the Aggies beat up on Saturday night was from his hometown.

The only thing that did matter, said the senior running back, was that UNLV stood in the way of Utah State's first 4-1 start since 1978.

"I don't think that put any more spice on it," said the Las Vegas native, who had a career-best performance in Utah State's 35-13 win over UNLV. "I feel like if it were any other team, I came out with the same intensity and played as hard as I do, any other game. It doesn't add anything to it. But I was excited for the way it turned out tonight."

And his teammates, coaches and the 24,226 fans were excited about his performance against the Rebels. Williams earned 113 yards rushing, 147 yards receiving and a touchdown in the win. His receiving yards were the most by a non-receiver since 1959. He's also the first running back since Robert Turbin did it in 2009 to earn 100 yards receiving and 100 yards rushing.

He was humble about his accomplishments Saturday night, which earned him the game ball.

"I'm definitely excited about that," he said. "But once again, I can't take full credit for it."

He praised sophomore quarterback Chuckie Keeton for making "some great reads tonight, which allowed me to get the ball like I did."

He also praised his offensive line and the team's offensive coordinator for doing a "great job of mixing it up."

Williams was coming off a career performance and WAC Offensive Player of the Week honors in USU's victory over Colorado State last weekend. His 200-yard performance in that game earned him the game ball, which he didn't keep.

"He turned, sat right here and gave it to the offensive line," said USU head coach Gary Andersen. "Hopefully he'll see fit to keep this one."

Keeton said he wasn't surprised with Williams' performance.

"He was a wideout two years ago," said Keeton. "He always talks about having the stickies (meaning he can catch). ? He definitely showed how well he can catch the ball, and his ability to get open and make yards after the catch."

For Williams, what made Saturday's win special wasn't that it came against a program that didn't even offer the highly regarded honor student a scholarship, but that it came the week before the team meets BYU. He, his coaches and teammates, hope they can utilize the momentum that's been building in Logan to find success in Provo next Friday.

Advice That You Can Use When Buying A Home | Eric Chua : Life ...

There never existed a better time in our economy to buy real estate. This is a very profitable market and comes with lower rates and a lower investment to begin with. The advice provided in this article will assist you in finding a property that is both affordable and profitable.

When you are buying a property, have some extra money so that you can pay for costs that you did not expect. Buyers will often calculate the final closing costs by combining the amount for the down payment, any points that go to the bank, as well as any prorated taxes for real estate. You have to keep in mind that the closing costs might include other items like school taxes or improvement bonds.

Ask for closing cost assistance from the seller to save yourself some up front expenses. For example, you could ask for a seller to buy down your interest rates for a limited period of time. Keep in mind, though, if you request financial incentives from the seller, he will probably be less willing to negotiate on the home?s selling price.

TIP! Keeping an approval letter with you will make you much more attractive to your sellers. If you wait to get an approval, it will lengthen the amount of time it takes to buy the home, which could cost you more in the end.

Assume that needed repairs are a given when you are considering purchased any foreclosed home. Many of the foreclosed homes that are on the market have been vacant for quite some time. Regular maintenance has more than likely not been done on the home, which means significant repairs should be expected. Foreclosed homes often will require HVAC systems installed, and may be infested with pests.

If you get any home you are looking to buy appraised, accept an appraiser with no less than five years of experience. Don?t hire appraisers recommended by real estate agents. There is possibly a pretty stern conflict of interest. The appraiser that you hire must be state-certified or state-licensed.

TIP! When negotiating with a seller, make a reasonable offer. A lot of people adopt an aggressive attitude in the hope that the other party will cave.

Always obtain home warranty protection. It doesn?t matter whether you are buying a new home from the person who builds it or from a previous owner. You should still ask them for a home warranty. Any quality builder will stand behind the home he or she has built for a certain period of time. Prior owners of your newly-purchased home should have no problem providing a home warranty of some duration as a way of compensating you for repairs that may need to be made.

When you are plunging into real estate, make sure you have clear goals in mind. Categorize your long-term and short-term goals. If the investment doesn?t match the goals you have in place, don?t bother with it. If you don?t consider your own needs before investing, you?re likely to lose money on the deal or get frustrated with your investment.

Be pre-qualified for a mortgage loans before looking at houses. You don?t want to end up coming across the house of your dreams to be told that you can?t get a large enough loan to buy it. Also, getting a loan can be a long process that you do not want to wait until last minute to begin.

TIP! When purchasing a foreclosed home, it is wise to assume that there will be repairs that will need to be made. Most foreclosed properties are in need of repair, because they have not been maintained for a very long time.

If you are interested in a home with a beautiful view, don?t pay that much more because of the viewing possibilities. Even though you might appreciate the view, in the long term, potential buyers may not. Therefore, you can buy the house with the view, just make sure you don?t overpay for it.

Get a professional to look at the building you want to buy. It will cost a bit of money, but do not have a friend or relative inspect the home, because should they miss something, there is nothing you can do.

Those who are wise and jump into this swirling market should follow the above article closely. It will help you avoid trouble and walk away with real estate that is under-priced and growing constantly in value. The key is to purchase the property and hold until the time is right before you make your big

TIP! If you?re thinking about relocating, you may want to consider looking online at the neighborhood of the house you?re thinking of purchasing. There is a wealth of information available on the Internet, even for small cities and towns.

US poised to add more points to big 8-4 lead

MEDINAH, Ill. (AP) ? This Ryder Cup is turning into a rout.

After taking a commanding 8-4 lead with a near-sweep Saturday morning in the foursomes, the Americans didn't even give Europe a chance to recover before starting the next romp. The U.S. had the lead in all but one of the fourball matches, with Webb Simpson and Bubba Watson leading the way at 4 up through 13 holes over Justin Rose and Francesco Molinari.

Only Steve Stricker and Tiger Woods were missing out on the fun ? again ? down 4 to Sergio Garcia and Luke Donald at the turn.

The Americans need 14 1/2 points to regain the Ryder Cup. The largest comeback in Ryder Cup history was at Brookline in 1999, when the U.S. erased a 10-6 deficit on the final day.

"I keep telling the guys we're not even halfway over with this tournament so far," captain Davis Love III said after the morning matches. "There's a lot of points left, let's keep doing what we're doing. They're buying into it, they're playing great."

Turning Medinah Country Club into a big lovefest, too. Roars of "U-S-A! U-S-A!" echoed throughout the sun-kissed course, and the U.S. point total changes so often fans are going to have whiplash from checking the scoreboards.

And this is with Keegan Bradley and Phil Mickelson sitting out the afternoon matches.

Bradley and Mickelson kick-started the Americans' big day in record-tying fashion, thrashing Lee Westwood and Luke Donald 7 and 6. The two are on such a roll they didn't even have to putt to win their first two holes. The Europeans conceded No. 1 when Mickelson put his second within 2 feet of the pin, and they gave the Americans No. 2 after Westwood put his tee shot in the water and missed the bogey putt.

Mickelson's gorgeous wedge set up Bradley with an 8-footer for birdie on No. 4, and he knocked it in easily, letting out a roar when the ball dropped into the cup. The Americans went 6 up when Donald had another putt lip out on 10, and the Europeans might as well have conceded then, the result was so inevitable.

Sure enough, two holes later, Mickelson played a perfect wedge from the rough, hitting the green about 20 feet left of the pin and trickling down a slope within a foot of the cup.

"Phil is a good partner to Keegan," Donald said. "He's obviously been a rock star this week, and they did nothing wrong."

The 7-and-6 win, in fact, matched the mark for most lopsided score in an 18-hole team match. Two other teams have won 7 and 6, both foursomes, with Paul Azinger and Mark O'Meara in 1991 the last to do it.

The victory made Bradley the first U.S. rookie to start 3-0 since Loren Roberts in 1995. And it handed Donald his second straight loss in foursomes after going unbeaten in his first six matches.

The U.S. got another big boost in the final match, Jim Furyk and Brandt Snedeker's 1-up victory over Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell.

The Northern Irish duo are considered Europe's top team, the No. 1 player in the world and the guy who delivered the winning point for Europe two years ago at Celtic Manor. But they've looked almost ordinary since Furyk and Snedeker forced them to grind out a victory in Friday's foursomes, and they couldn't overcome their slow start Saturday.

"We were just parring the place to death, which is not good enough in this format," McDowell said. "We just couldn't get the ball to go in the hole. Rory had a few putts in particular that burned some edges, and we just couldn't get any momentum going."

Take the last three holes. A nice iron by McDowell gave McIlroy an easy birdie putt on 16, and he made it to pare Furyk and Snedeker's lead to 1 up. But McIlroy followed that with a miss on a 15-footer that would have evened the match on 17.

McIlroy's monster drive on 18 put the Europeans in good position to scratch out a halve ? especially after Snedeker went in a bunker off the tee. But McDowell flew the green on the second shot, leaving McIlroy with a long putt from the fringe. He nearly made it, but his line was about a half-inch too far to the right and McIlroy groaned as he watched it roll on by.

When Snedeker got a 25-footer to about a foot, the Europeans conceded.

"We are in a hole," McDowell said. "These guys, there's blood in the water and they're up for it. They've got a head of steam up and we've got to try and stop it."

Tunisia sees budget deficit narrowing to 6 pct/GDP in 2013

TUNIS (Reuters) - Tunisia's budget deficit should narrow to 6 percent next year from 6.6 percent of GDP expected in 2012, the central bank governor said on Friday, indicating economic recovery in the cradle of Arab Spring revolts may take longer than anticipated.

Chadli Ayari, who took over in July after his predecessor was sacked, also said a 3.5 percent economic growth in 2013 was achievable while the government bets on 4.5 percent up from 3.5 percent it expects this year.

Ayari did make direct references to the government's growth projections, but he went as far as predicting that the local economy, which is heavily anchored to the now-troubled euro zone, may not fully recover in 2014.

"2014 will not be the year of recovery for the Tunisian economy. It is still a year of transition that may see the premise of recovery," Ayari told reporters.

"A 3.5 percent growth is possible (to achieve) in 2013," he added.

Government statistics show GDP growth stood at 3.5 percent during the first half of 2012.

The Tunisian economy is gradually recovering from last year's political turmoil but faces problems as a result of the crisis in the euro zone, the main market for its exports and the source of a majority of tourist visitors.

It has however held a steady course on inflation, interest rates and exchange rates even in the turmoil that followed President Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali's ousting in January last year.

But a string of resignations, including that of the finance minister and the central bank governor, appears to indicate that holding that line may not be easy. For years, Tunisia has had the highest GDP per capita in the region and post-revolution expectations from its 10-million population are high.

Social bullying prevalent in children's television

ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2012) ? A new research study led by an Indiana University professor has found that social bullying is just as prevalent in children's television as depictions of physical aggression.

The study, "Mean on the Screen: Social Aggression in Programs Popular With Children," which appears in the Journal of Communication, found that 92 percent of the top 50 program for children between the ages of 2 and 11 showed characters involved in social aggression.

On average, there were 14 different incidents of social aggression per hour, or once every four minutes.

While physical aggression in television for children has been extensively documented, this is believed to be among the first studies to analyze children's exposure to behaviors such as cruel gossiping and manipulation of friendship.

"Social aggression was more likely to be enacted by an attractive perpetrator, to be featured in a humorous context and neither rewarded or punished," wrote Nicole Martins, assistant professor of telecommunications in the IU College of Arts and Sciences. "In these ways, social aggression on television poses more of a risk for imitation and learning than do portrayals of physical aggression."

Martins, the lead researcher on the study, and Barbara Wilson, professor of communication at the University of Illinois, conducted a content analysis of the 50 most popular children's shows according to Nielsen Media Research from December 2006 to March 2007. In all, 150 television shows were viewed and analyzed.

Careful attention was given to what was portrayed in the cases of social aggression, whether the behavior was rewarded or punished, justified or committed by an attractive perpetrator.

The findings suggest that some of the ways in which social aggression is contextualized make these depictions particularly problematic for young viewers.

"These findings should help parents and educators recognize that there are socially aggressive behaviors on programs children watch," Martins said. "Parents should not assume that a program is OK for their child to watch simply because it does not contain physical violence.

"Parents should be more aware of portrayals that may not be explicitly violent in a physical sense but are nonetheless anti-social in nature," Martins added.

The vast majority of socially aggressive incidents -- 78 percent -- were verbal: words to hurt the self-esteem or social standing of another character on the program. The most common types of social aggression were insults (52 percent) or name-calling (25 percent). Other common types of negative behavior shown were teasing (10 percent) and sarcasm (9 percent).

Only about 20 percent of all socially aggressive incidents were non-verbal in nature and typically employed a mean face (36 percent) or laughter meant to lower the self-esteem of another character (31 percent). Rolling eyes, finger pointing and simply ignoring the other person also were common.

"We also coded whether social aggression was directly perpetrated at the target -- such as making a mean face -- or indirectly perpetrated behind the target's back -- such as spreading a rumor," the authors wrote. "The vast majority of socially aggressive incidents (86 percent) were enacted directly at the target. Rarely were socially aggressive incidents perpetrated behind the target's back."

While previous research has demonstrated that gossip is one of the most common forms of social aggression in real life, it was rarely seen in children's television shows analyzed for the study. Martins and Wilson concluded that gossip, due to its indirect nature, may have been seen by program producers as being too subtle for advancing a story's plot.

Gov't appeals to hacktivists to stop attacks - Home ? Other Sections ...

Louis Casambre, ICTO Executive Director

MANILA, Philippines - The Department of Science and Technology's Information and Communications Technology Office (ICTO) on Friday appealed to hacktivists to stop attacking government websites as it admitted that there is a need to upgrade the state's internet security system.

?We understand the concerns of the public and our netizens on several controversial provisions of RA (Republic Act) 10175 (Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012). However there are proper avenues for expressing their indignation rather than committing cybercrime to protest a bill that aims to prevent cybercrime,? ICTO Executive Director Louis Casambre said in a statement.?

A group of hacktivists called Anonymous Philippines has been attacking government websites in protest against the new cybercrime law.

The latest victim of the group was the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines' website. The website was also defaced by the hacktivists' message against the new cybercrime law, but it was immediately restored.

Casambre said that the latest attacks expose the existing vulnerabilities of government websites and underscores the need for a "national cybersecurity plan."

As the ICTO has yet to come up with the plan, it renewed its directive to government system administrators to review their existing internet security measures.

"In the meantime, we would like to request our government systems administrators to review their own policies and utilize industry best practices when it comes to cybersecurity,? Casambre said.

IRR to balance new law

ICTO has been designated as head of the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center, the main body in charge of inter-agency coordination, monitoring, policy formulation and enforcement of the Cybercrime Prevention Act as well as the development of a national cybersecurity plan.

Along with the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), the ICTO is also tasked with the formulation of the bill?s implementing rules and regulations (IRR).

Casambre said that they will address at least some of the controversial measures in the development of the IRR. He said they are planning to hold multi-sectoral consultations with various stakeholders to ensure that a balance is struck between protecting individual rights, freedom of expression, and national security in the rules.

Casambre insisted that the country needs a new cybercrime law.

He said that before the passage of the cybercrime bill into law, the ICTO had limited legal tools to address cybercrimes such as identity theft, computer fraud, and hacking. He added what is also need is a balanced legal regime which addresses both the potentials and perils of the Internet, and the rights of all stakeholders.

"In addressing cybersecurity challenges, our legislators have finally passed a law after a difficult process spanning several Congresses. For us in the executive, we now need to ensure that the IRR will help balance perceived shortcomings while having an implementation framework that is both legally grounded and technically sound. In achieving this balance, we also do respect the rights of netizens and other stakeholders to seek clarifications with the courts on some of the bill?s more controversial provisions,? Casambre said.

Farewell music professor, hello tutor - Canberra CityNews

EVEN as the ANU is shunting its teaching staff at the School of Music out the door, it?s busy replacing them?but at a much lower level.?

Image of happy drumming hands

A curious advertisement, featuring an image of happy drumming hands, has appeared online at http://music.anu.edu.au/node/4401, calling for music tutors to service the new Bachelor of Music Performance courses commencing in February next year.

?Are you interested in becoming a tertiary instrumental tutor at the ANU School of Music?? the advertisement asks. ?The ANU School of Music invites expressions of interest from qualified people interested in contract tutoring at undergraduate level for courses in (Semester 1) or July 2013 (Semester 2).?

Academic staff accustomed to having their long years of high-level performance and training recognised and honoured with professorial status have already been sidelined with a planned curriculum that will place musicology and doctoral theses ahead of practice, though the ad is careful to tick the box that says, ?a key element of music instruction is the individual one-to-one mentoring of the student by the tutor.?

According to a group of staff members who preferred to remained unnamed, the new Head of School, Peter Tregear, has counselled students to bargain with tutors to get their fees down so that the proposed Professional Development Allowance (PDA) for students can go further.

It can easily cost between $100-$170 an hour for a top level instrumental teacher and under the old model that was incorporated into the main course. But this advertisement makes it clear that the actual teaching of an instrument is a service provided to the course, not a central element of it.

The ad goes on, ?Your contract as an Instrumental Tutor will be for a specified number of one-hour-long one-to-one lessons per week over the teaching semester specified (usually 13 lessons, or one per week). For each contact hour, the rate of pay includes an expectation that the tutor will provide a lesson schedule for each student, and at the end of each teaching period, submit a Student Progress Report to the School of Music on each student?s performance development over the semester.?

Although the repeated assertion has been that the old School of Music model was too costly, it is well-known that the ANU?s planners have long nurtured an ideological antipathy to conservatorium-based music studies, seeing itself as a centre of loftier investigations into theory, musicology and composition. There are parallels in other disciplines which involve practice.

Though the university believes competition for places at the School will still be still keen, the word around the traps is that elite musicians will go anywhere but Canberra for their higher education, with the Queensland Conservatorium at Griffith University looking likes the big winner.

You can also filter your results by location. Take note of what companies these people work for and add those companies to your target list.

Searching Companies by Industry/Location Etc.

You can slide and dice a company search in many different ways:

  • Name
  • Location
  • Industry
  • Relationship (1st, 2nd, 3rd degree connections, or all LinkedIn members)
  • Size (number of employees)
  • Number of followers
  • Fortune 500 ranking

You may want to see who the employers are in your city. Or you may want to see where people you know work. Or you may know that you want to work for a small company. You can filter your search by one or many of these criteria to find potential employers (aka target companies).

Following Companies

You?ve developed a list of target companies. These are places you would like to work or at least you think you may. These are not necessarily companies that are posting jobs at this time. This list is any company that could potentially hire you because they have positions you could do!

With your list in hand, follow these companies!

Part of your regular routine is to monitor the updates of companies you are following. This is easily done by clicking on the ?company? tab on your home page of LinkedIn.

Now that you are following companies, LinkedIn is smart enough to suggest other companies you may want to follow. This is similar to the function you have seen with recommendations of people to connect with.

Company Research

See who you are connected to (or should be connected to) in the companies you are following. LinkedIn makes this easy to do. When you look at the company profile, it shows you who you are connected to who works there!

Check out the company?s tabs. They will have Employee Insights, and maybe even products/services and Careers tabs.

You can also see a list of companies viewed by other LinkedIn users. It says: ?viewers also viewed:? Chances are, the companies listed there are competitors or similar. See if you should add them to your growing target list! Then, follow them too! If you want to be extra sleuthy, you can see where employees used to work and where they went after. Again, more potential targets for you!

Now What?

Your mission now, should you choose to accept it is to make personal contact with people who work inside your target companies and schedule an informational meeting! You are seeking information about what is going on within the company. Your secondary mission is to get to know the person and have them get to know you so that when they have a job, you are the person they will call before it gets advertised!

Opportunities?Not Jobs

I have purposely NOT discussed the ?Job? search functionality within LinkedIn. Searching for posted jobs certainly is possible and something you can do on LinkedIn. I am pretty sure you can figure this out. Tapping into the hidden job market is a proactive approach to finding your next job. Give it a try! See what new companies you can add to your target list and begin following for potential opportunities!

Are there other tricks or creative ways you are harnessing the power and accessing the data from LinkedIn? Leave a comment! Inquiring minds want to know!

Time is running out - Ecademy

Should you be taking advantage of current retirement planning rules?

Pensions have long been a highly tax-efficient way to save for retirement. If applicable to your particular situation, here are two opportunities you may wish to consider before the rules change next April.

50 per cent tax relief
While the 50 per cent additional tax rate is in place, it is still possible to receive up to 50 per cent tax relief on contributions to pensions during this current tax year. The 50 per cent rate will be reduced to 45 per cent from 6 April 2013, and this is therefore the last tax year to receive tax relief at up to 50 per cent on pension contributions.

Carry forward of unused reliefs
You may be able to contribute in excess of the annual allowance of ?50,000 and receive tax relief using Carry Forward relief if you have contributed less than ?50,000 in any of the previous three tax years. If you pay 50 per cent tax, you need to do this in the current tax year to maximise tax relief before it drops to 45 per cent. As this is a complex area, professional advice should be sought.

All figures relate to the 2012/13 tax year. A pension is a long-term investment, and the fund value may fluctuate and can go down. Your eventual income may depend upon the size of the fund at retirement, future interest rates and tax legislation.

Weighing up all the options when you are thinking about retirement planning can seem daunting. To find out how we can help you, please contact us to discuss your requirements .

Information is based on our current understanding of taxation legislation and regulations. Any levels and bases of, and reliefs from taxation, are subject to change. The value of investments and income from them may go down. You may not get back the original amount invested. Pension drawdown can leave your funds open to investment risk and is not suitable for everyone.

The value of your investment and the income from it can go down as well as up and you may not get back the original amount invested. Past performance is not a guide to future performance. Please contact us for further information or if you are in any doubt as to the suitability of an investment.

Work Out in the Morning to Curb Your Appetite Later in the Day [Video]

Work Out in the Morning to Curb Your Appetite Later in the DayWork Out in the Morning to Curb Your Appetite Later in the Day It may not seem like it, but a morning workout may be the key to effectively managing your portions and curbing your appetite later in the day. One new study pointed out that a good morning workout reduces your motivation to eat, which may translate to you being less likely to hit the fridge and load up on food.

The Brigham Young University study, published in the October edition of the journal Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, put normal-weight and overweight participants through a 45 minute exercise regimen every morning, and then showed them pictures of food, compared to people of the same weight who were shown the same pictures but didn't work out. The researchers measured their neural activity when shown the food, and participants who had exercised actually showed lower brain response than those who hadn't.

Granted, the study used a small sample size (35 women), and the 45 minutes of exercise was treadmill walking, so there's definitely plenty of research to be done here, but if the implication is that morning workouts will keep us from pigging out in front of the fridge for breakfast or overeating at lunch, it's worth a try. It feels a little counter-intuitive, that exercise might make you less hungry, but the researchers explain a bit in the video above, or hit the link below to read more about the study and methodology.

CSN: Giants clinch NL West again, in style

September 22, 2012, 7:45 pm

? ? ?
BOX SCORE

SAN FRANCISCO ? Pablo Sandoval kept his eye on the ball, watched it into his glove, hit the rail and flipped end over end as a sellout crowd gasped.

He blew bubblegum through it all.

And in that instant in the fourth inning Saturday night, you knew: The Giants were not going to drop this thing. They were going to clinch the eighth NL West title in franchise history, and their second in three years.

And they were going to do it in style.

[BAGGARLY: Giants knock down doors, resoundingly win NL West]

Madison Bumgarner, when he wasn?t busy bear-hugging Sandoval in the dugout, rediscovered the syrupy goodness in his delivery, Buster Posey was serenaded with the loudest ?MVP? chants yet heard and the incredible Marco Scutaro added to his legend with three more hits as the Giants beat the San Diego Padres 8-4 to set off a party scene at AT&T Park.

Sergio Romo sent the Giants into the postseason, getting pinch hitter Mark Kotsay to line out. Center fielder Angel Pagan raised two hands like a triumphant middleweight, Romo strutted a dance as Posey ran to embrace him and the Giants stormed the field in celebration.

Just as they did two years ago, the players took a victory lap around the warning track to embrace fans. It wasn't old hat for all of them, though. Romo, Sandoval and Posey were the only starting players on the field for the final out who own 2010 World Series rings.

Starting pitching report
Bumgarner was coming off an effective outing but Giants coaches were concerned because he kept coming out of his delivery while issuing five walks.

Bumgarner stressed that there was no need to worry. Somehow, the 23-year-old left-hander from down on the North Carolina farm knows how to grab the stage when the lights shine brightest. You do remember Game 4 on Halloween Night, don?t you?

Bumgarner met the moment again, and now he can jot down ?division-clinching victory? on his career dossier. He operated down in the zone, elevated his fastball when he wanted the Padres to chase and didn?t give up an earned run through his first five innings.

The Padres scratched him for an unearned run in the first after Chris Denorfia hit a leadoff single. Bumgarner had the runner picked off, but first baseman Brandon Belt threw wide to second base and Denorfia took third on the error. He scored on a ground out.

[RATTO: It wasn't clean, but it was classically Giant]

Bumgarner was tough after that. The Padres only got two runners into scoring position against him in the next four innings, and they only managed those by stealing second base.

But Bumgarner allowed a leadoff single in the sixth to Logan Forsythe and then left a two-out, first-pitch slider at the belt where ?Wild Blue? Yonder Alonso could hurt him. Alonso sent it into the right field arcade for a two-run shot that cut the Giants? lead to 5-3, and Bumgarner stomped off the mound as manager Bruce Bochy employed his bullpen.

Bumgarner (16-10) joined Matt Cain in surpassing the 200-inning mark. Cain has done it in six consecutive seasons; Bumgarner has done it each of the last two years, and is a third of an inning away from matching his career high (204 2/3).

Bullpen report
Guillermo Mota recorded a quick strikeout and the Giants? bullpen committee did not leave open any drafty doors to spoil the building heat and anticipation at China Basin. Jeremy Affeldt struck out the side in the seventh, Santiago Casilla gave up a run on a ground out in the eighth and manager Bruce Bochy made sure Javier Lopez and Romo both got some love in the ninth.

Lopez earned a thunderous ovation when he struck out Alonso, and then Romo adjourned the proceedings -- and started the party -- by pitching around a single while recording the final two outs.

At the plate
The Giants offense made it another ensemble night. And it was no surprise that Scutaro, their understated addition at the trade deadline, was in the middle of almost every scoring rally.

Scutaro lined a pair of two-out, RBI hits and finished with three on the night? to give him 180 on the season ? fewer than only Derek Jeter, Miguel Cabrera and Andrew McCutchen in the major leagues. Scutaro is hitting .361 in 53 games as a Giant ? all while the Colorado Rockies are paying a quarter of his salary.

[EXTRA BAGGS: Nothing small about the Scutaro deal, etc.]

The Giants lead the NL in sacrifice flies and they employed the ?deep enough? fly ball to take the lead in the first inning. After loading the bases with a pair of walks and Scutaro?s first single of the game, Buster Posey drove in his 97th run of the season and Hunter Pence drove in his 96th with a pair of sacrifice flies.

They spent the rest of the night doing what so many Giants clubs have failed to do in the past: They put constant pressure on the opposing pitcher.

Brandon Belt doubled and scored on Bumgarner?s single in the second inning. Bumgarner?s sacrifice in the fourth moved Belt and Crawford into scoring position for Scutaro, who collected a two-run, two-out single.

And Scutaro came through with yet another two-out, RBI hit in the sixth.

Belt added a solo homer in the eighth, you know, just for variety?s sake.

In field
Sandoval?s catch earned a standing ovation in the fourth, and for good reason. While blowing a bubble, he flipped over the rail near the photo well and managed to hang on with his right hand while suspended upside down. He alertly held his glove aloft to show the umpires that he had secured Alonso?s foul pop.

Attendance
The Giants announced 42,418 paid as the fans crowded every inch of standing room. They saw what they hoped to see.

Up next
The Giants wrap up their three-game series with the San Diego Padres when Tim Lincecum (10-14, 4.91) takes the mound on Sunday. The Padres, who might be more clear headed, will start left-hander Eric Stults (6-3. 2.69).

Paul Ryan makes pitch to Florida Hispanics

Paul Ryan made his pitch to Cuban-Americans at a packed Miami restaurant on Saturday, telling them that a Romney-Ryan administration would be "tough" on Fidel Castro, reports ABC News.

The vice presidential candidate was joined by?former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and Mitt Romney's Spanish-speaking son Craig at the famous Versailles restaurant in Miami's Little Havana.?

?Let me tell you this, in a Mitt Romney administration we will not keep practicing this policy of appeasement, we will be tough on this brutal dictator, all it has done is reward more despotism ? and we will help those pro-democracy groups,? Ryan said.

?We will be tough on (Cuban president Fidel) Castro, tough on (Venezuelan President Hugo) Chavez. And it?s because we know that?s the right policy for our country.?

Ryan also called on other Florida politicians? Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen,?chairwoman of the House Foreign Relations Committee,?former U.S. Rep. Lincoln Diaz-Balart, and his brother, current U.S. Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart, to help him make his case.?

?I learned from these friends, from Mario, from Lincoln, from Ileana, just how brutal the Castro regime is, just how this president's policy of appeasement is not working,? Ryan said, according to NBC.?

The crowd of mostly supporters seemed to welcome Ryan's?'tough on Castro' talk but its unclear if the Romney ticket can get enough Hispanic support to win Florida's 29 electoral votes.

Angela Buehler, 33, a stay at home mom from Fort Lauderdale, told the Sun Sentinel that?after hearing Ryan speak she's even more determined to vote for Romney and Ryan in November.

But Giancarlo Sopo, a Cuban-American Obama-supporter, told the Sun Sentinel that voters need to examine Ryan more closely before buying his supposed anti-Castro stands.

"To paraphrase President Clinton, it takes real brass to vote three times against economic sanctions on the Cuban regime and then come to Little Havana and ask Cuban-Americans for their vote," he said.

"It's one thing to have a genuine disagreement with someone on a policy. It's something else to change your position from one day to the next just to pander in order to win votes."
