As Hostess Folds, Congress Thinks Of New Ways To Kill Snack ...

From Forbes?..

I?m not gonna lie to you: I?m not a big fan of Twinkies. Truth be told, I can?t actually remember eating one as a kid. We didn?t eat Wonder Bread either. We weren?t anti-Hostess. And my mom wasn?t on a health tear for most of our youth: the reality was that those were brand named foods and they cost money and that was something we didn?t have a lot of.

Instead, I grew up ? horrors! ? eating discount store bread and homemade cookies and cakes. There wasn?t a Twinkie to be found in my lunchbox throughout my entire childhood (though we did have the occasional Little Debbie cake when we were feeling flush). All of the marketing efforts in the world weren?t going to make my ?ber-shopper mom believe that our lives would somehow be better if she bought Twinkies. Or Hohos. Or Wonder Bread. And no amount of wheedling and whining from us would have changed her mind.

That?s why I find it curious that Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) has introduced a bill to deny federal tax deductions associated with marketing so-called ?junk food? to children. Apparently, Kucinich believes that kids are calling the shots in most households ? and it?s making them fat.

The measure, H.R.6599, has as its purpose ?to amend the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 to protect children?s health by denying any deduction for advertising and marketing directed at children to promote the consumption of food at fast food restaurants or of food of poor nutritional quality.? The bill, alternately called ? wait for it ? the ?Stop Subsidizing Childhood Obesity Act? was introduced on November 16, 2012, and has 11 co-sponsors: Rep. John Conyers (D-MI), Rep. Bob Filner (D-CA), Rep. Raul Grijalva (D-AZ), Rep. Maurice Hinchey (D-NY), Rep. Michael Honda (D-CA), Rep. Jesse Jackson (D-IL), Rep. Eddie Johnson (D-TX), Rep. Gwen Moore (D-WI), Rep. James Moran (D-VA), Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) and Rep. Lynn Woolsey (D-CA).
