Qualities of a Father

The qualities of a father goes way beyond the bread winner of the family. Gone were those days when a father?s role was to find a job so he can support the home. A father has a responsibility to his family not only financially but physically. He has to be supportive of his wife and children. Here is my opinion on the qualities of a father:

Be an active listener to your child. When he is speaking to you about anything give him your undivided attention.

Pay special interest in his everyday activities whether it is academics or sports.

Allow him to make decisions on his own. You are not going to let them make a decision about something that can be harmful. So give your support.

Show respect and you will earn respect. If he has an opinion allow him to speak and you listen. He will do the same when you have an opinion.

Communication. A child needs to be able to communicate with his father. There are some issues that children will prefer to speak to Dad about rather than Mom.

Being able to stand firm when giving a punishment. You do not want to change your mind in the middle of the punishment. If you have decided to ground him for a week, well that is what it should be despite the cries and pleas.

Trust. You said you will be there and he knows you will be there. Try not to make promises that cannot be kept. Breaking promises too often destroys a relationship.

Having good qualities of a father will not only end at you. These characteristics will definitely carry on from generation to generation. A child that has a good relationship with his parents and respects them will take these morals wherever he goes.

There are many children today that refuse to talk about their Dad among their peers. This can stem from a number of things. Some fathers being trapped with the disease of alcoholism which can cause havoc in the the household.

Fathering children does not have to be a hard task. As long as you stick to the basics you will be the perfect role model for your children. They want to be able to go off to school and be able to speak about their Dad proudly.

Finally, in everything you do trust in God and lean not to your own understanding.
